Software Defined Networking (SDN) is revolutionizing the traditional networking approaches that have become too complex, closed, proprietary and/or difficult to program. The technology has the potential to enable network innovation by allowing network owners and operators more control of their infrastructure, thus allowing customization, optimization, and the reduction in overall capital and operational expenses.

SDN is still early in its lifecycle, and has not yet crossed the chasm. The technology today is maturing fast and growing its ecosystem, but there is still much to be discussed, explored, innovated and built. Analyst firm IDC predicts the worldwide SDN market for the enterprise and cloud service provider segments is forecasted to grow from $360 million in 2013 to $3.7 billion by 2016. We have seen this increase since its inception, with the growth of vendors and startups developing innovative SDN technologies and solutions, increases in deployments and uses cases of SDN, and more participation from the networking community.

Open Networking Summit (ONS) 2013 brings together the entire SDN ecosystem comprising of thought leaders, business leaders, luminaries, creators, researchers, innovators and engineers to offer the very highest caliber presentations, tutorials, exhibitions, latest research and enable the SDN community to interact and share ideas.

As we set the countdown to only two weeks away from the next Summit, here are 10 reasons why you should attend ONS 2013 to plug-in to SDN:

  1. ONS is the only not-for-profit conference exclusively committed to bringing together thought leaders, luminaries, creators and innovators of OpenFlow and SDN, to solve real networking problems.
  2. ONS is the premier conference to ‘plug-in’ to SDN with the highest caliber content, the most dynamic thought leaders, and ‘the’ place to join the SDN community.
  3. ONS is the only event led by the inventors of SDN, we deliver content you can’t find anywhere else.
  4. ONS 2013 has shaped really well with an exciting lineup of Distinguished Speakers and exhibitors from early adopters, leading incumbents, service providers, SDN leaders, disruptive startups, leading vendors and visionary investors of SDN.
  5. An exhibition hall with over 40 Exhibits from startups, vendors, providers and incumbents will showcase OpenFlow and SDN technologies, products and services.
  6. SDN Idol @ONS is a friendly competition among SDN Exhibitors to participate and showcase their latest implementation of OpenFlow and SDN to highlight the success of their technology, product or service and present why it is leading the industry.
  7. ONS claims another SDN First with organization of SDN PlugFest to show how the various SDN building blocks from different SDN vendors can work together and support new and innovative services. PlugFest will demonstrate this interoperability among different SDN components from different vendors and promote the viability of SDN to a wider community.
  8. A keynote presentation from Vinton Cerf, vice president and chief Internet evangelist, will provide Google’s perspective on SDN and OpenFlow. The audience will also be afforded with additional keynotes from Bethany Mayer, senior vice president and general manager of the HP Networking business unit, Rose Schooler, general manager of the Communications and Storage Infrastructure Group (CSIG) at Intel Corporation, and Jayshree Ullal, president and chief executive officer of Arista Networks.
  9. There will be numerous informative sessions lead by industry pundits from Big Switch Networks, Deutsche Telekom AG, eBay, Ericsson, Fidelity, Goldman Sachs, Google, Internet2, Juniper Networks, Khosla Ventures, Open Networking Foundation, North Bridge Venture Partners, NEC Corporation, NTT Communications Corporation, VMware.
  10. The conference will carry exciting new sessions on hot startups and venture investing, a research track, and a developer track to allow developers of open source SDN platforms to discuss how to move the platforms forward.

Now in its third year, ONS is continuing to accelerate the awareness and adoption of the networking industry’s most disruptive technology, SDN, and its foundation protocol, the OpenFlow standard.

After two sold-out conferences in 2011 and 2012, ONS will return to Santa Clara on April 15-17 at the Santa Clara Convention Center to showcase the significant developments of SDN, as well as serve as the place to learn, contribute, and connect with the entire ecosystem.
