Veeam Software, during the VeeamON event, has a announced Veeam Endpoint Backup FREE, a simple and free standalone solution that enables users to back up Windows-based laptops and desktops to an internal or external hard drive, a NAS (network attached storage) share or a Veeam backup repository.

One of the misunderstandings of Veeam Backup & Replication product is that it cannot handle the backup of physical system: this is not exactly true. For virtual machines Veeam remain still an agentless backup solution. But you can register Windows (or also Linux) physical machine inside your infrastructure and in this case you can handle a backup (“agent” based) limited only to files.

But with the announce of Veeam Endpoint Backup FREE the physical environment will exted to all the client devices (actually only Windows-based starting from Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008) to make a more complete backup solution.

“With Veeam Endpoint Backup FREE, IT professionals now have a simple solution for backing up endpoints, which has long been a major data protection headache,” said Ratmir Timashev, CEO of Veeam. “Veeam believes that modern data centers should be fully virtualized, but we also recognize that unlike servers, endpoints will always remain physical, and they need to be backed up as well.  Plus, if the IT organization still has a few physical servers left in their data center, Veeam Endpoint Backup FREE can help fill that gap.”

Veeam Endpoint Backup FREE will become available in early 2015.
