During the last IT Press Tour (the 14th), in the Silicon Valley (during December 1-5, 2014) we met several companies in different categories (Cloud, Storage and Big Data).

The last (during a nice dinner) on the first day was Platform9, that I’ve already met (via conference) during the announce of their product (not yet available).

ITPressTour-LogoTo introduce the company there were Sirish Raghuram (Co-founder, CEO) and Madhura Maskasky (Co-founder, Head of Product) that have started from their vision: build a SaaS management solution for private clouds. The target Market are the Mid-to-large sized enterprises (IT).

The company was founded in Oct 2013, by several VMware veterans with decades of experience in virtualization and enterprise datacenter management, and it’s based in Sunnyvale, CA

As written in a previous post their solution is a dedicated (for each customer) OpenStack environment available as a public cloud SaaS, that can handle (that will be able to handle) VMware ESXi, KVM and also Docker or bare metal environments on premises.

We have seens a short demo of the product, but of course more considerations will be possible when the product will be available and also the licensing will be clear (probably will be based on physical socket of the managed systems, but actually neither the pricing has been announced).

For sure the idea to embrace OpenStack bring some challenges: this is not a “simple” product, but require several work to be Platform9 team has fixed 400+ bugs on top of stable branch, so is very active in this community. Considering that is a service in the SaaS form, all OpenStack upgrades are handled directly from Platform9 people (mainly each year, except of course bug fixing or security fixing). But also the availability, the scaling, the backup of this service is completly handled by them.

To know more on the product (and also on their approach) you can attend the next VMUG CloudOps SIG event.
