VMware vSphere 5.5 has a new update release and now it’s available the vSphere 5.5 U3 on the download site.

For the hypervisor part, except the bug issues fixed, the most interesting news are the certification of PVSCSI Adapter, where the PVSCSI adapter is certified for use with MSCS, core clustering and applications including SQL and Exchange, and the support for Next Generation Processors, with the addition of next generation processors from Intel and AMD.

For the vCenter part, the most interesting news are:

  • vCenter Server database support: vCenter Server now supports the following external databases:
    • Oracle 12c R1 P2 (12.1.0.2)
    • Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Service Pack 2
    • Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 3
  • Increased guest operating system support: vCenter Server has added support for the following guest operating systems.
    • CentOS 7.0
    • Oracle Linux 7.0
    • Ubuntu 14.10
    • Windows 10
    • RHEL 6.6
    • RHEL 7 .1
    • CentOS 7.1
    • Oracle Linux 7.1

Important not added on late September:

A major bug was discovered in VMware vSphere 5.5 Update 3: VM can crash after a snapshot delete and, of course, in many cases this happens during backup. Crashes are independant on the guest operating system. VMware has found the issue and is going to fix it soon.

But avoid to upgrade before this issue has been fixed!
