VMware Virtual SAN (VSAN) 6.1 was announced during the VMworld US 2015 with some new interesting features. Now it’s finally available on VMware vSphere download page.

Considering that it’s implemented at hypervisor level, there isn’t a specific download: you have to upgrade (or download) vSphere 6.0 Update 1.

VMware Virtual SAN 6.1 increases data protection options for business-critical environments with the new Stretched Cluster feature providing zero-point Recovery Point Objective (RPO) and enhanced VMware vSphere Replication. Additionally, VMware Virtual SAN 6.1 enables new advanced management and monitoring through deep integration with VMware vRealize Operations and the new Virtual SAN Health Check Plug-In for performance monitoring, root cause analysis and capacity planning.

And don’t miss the new VSAN beta opportunity (not sure if it will be a VSAN 6.2 or what else) with some really interesting new features: deduplication and erasure coding! Until now VSAN was a little poor in native data services, but those two new feature can make it very powerful.

Strange (but not so much) that there is no rumors about a back-porting on those features on the standard VMFS… maybe the traditional VMFS5 will remain as is and gradually replaced by the new VMFS included in VSAN (but only for VSAN) or the Virtual Volumes.

If you are interested in being considered for the beta, then you can summit your information at www.vmware.com/go/vsan6beta.

Before upgrading to vSphere 6.0U1, note that there is an issue with Veeam Backup and, according to KB2121021, seems that B&R is not the only product impacted.

Also there is another big issue, documented in KB2124669 where ESXi 6.0 can loose network connectivity with NETDEV WATCHDOG timeouts in the vmkernel.log, this second one is bigger and can impact not only 6.0U1, but also 6.0!
