Browsing Posts in vSphere

Reading Time: 3 minutes The last week I’ve realized an article for the StarWind blog and focused on the design and architecture of VMware vCenter and PSC topologies (see VMware vCenter and PSC topologies). Some days ago, there was an interesting post from Emad Younis, on how the external PSC deployment it’s not only an old approach, but will also become no more supported in future release of vSphere (see: External Platform Services Controller, A Thing of the Past).

Reading Time: < 1 minute This is an article realized for StarWind blog and focused on the design and architecture of VMware vCenter and PSC topologies. See the original post. You can “federate” multiple vCenter Server systems using vCenter Linked Mode (introduced in vSphere 4.0) to build a single pane of glass and share information between vCenter instances, like view and manage the inventories of all the vCenter Server systems that are linked.

Reading Time: 3 minutes Now that VMware vSphere 6.7 Update 1 was released in GA the “missing piece” was still the Platinum bundle. But now also VMware vSphere Platinum is finally in General Availability (GA). Announced during the VMworld US 2018, VMware vSphere Platinum is an new edition and a new bundle. The new vSphere Platinum is basically VMware vSphere 6.7 Update 1 Enterprise Plus with the addition of VMware AppDefense. Funny but there is no info about the announce credits on VMware Cloud on AWS (Credits worth $10,000 for VMware Cloud on AWS) that now are no more mentioned.

Reading Time: 3 minutes The new release VMware vSphere 6.7U1 has a lot of improvements, but one has not been emphasized too much: VMware vSphere 6.7 Update 1 finally supports Microsoft Active Directory 2016 schema and relative functional level! Lot of people forget that  vCenter Server, vCenter Single Sign-On and the VMware Platform Services Controller have their own interoperability matrix with Active Directory versions based on the Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) domain functional level, not only with the Windows Server operating system on which Active Directory is running.

Reading Time: 2 minutes Seams that the new VMware vSphere 6.7 Update 1 will break all the Veeam Backup & Replication backup jobs! As reported in the Veeam KB 2443, VMware 6.7 Update 1 is actually NOT supported by Veeam B&R and will be supported only with Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5 Update 4. More information are available on Veeam KB 2784 and this forum thread.

Reading Time: 2 minutes After some months from the announce, finally VMware vSphere 6.7 Update 1 is now generally available (GA) and you can now download all the bits. Of course, this also mean a new version of the VMware vSAN 6.7 Update 1. But more importantly it means also a fully featured vSphere Client with the new version of the HTML5 client in vSphere 6.7 Update 1! There is a bunch of videos available on YouTube with all the HTML5 client features. But before read more, note that actually Veeam Backup and Replication does not support vSphere 6.7 […]

Reading Time: 3 minutes In the last Veeam Community Forums Digest, there are some interesting notes about some possible issues with vSphere Storage vMotion, that usually is used to move backup your VMs in the original datastore during a Instant VM Recovery (IR). Seems that there is major bug in Storage VMotion functionality of vSphere 6.7 when you are using the optional IR feature that allows you to redirect virtual disk updates to the selected datastore.
