During the last IT Press Tour (the 14th), in the Silicon Valley (December 1-5, 2014) we met several companies in different categories (Cloud, Storage and Big Data). The first on the second day was Exablox, and probably their presentation was one of the best, both for the contents and the type of presentation.

Some weeks ago I’ve got the opportunity to talk with some people from Maxta Inc. about their storage solutions. Maxta’s mission is to dramatically simplify and streamline IT by thinking outside the storage box. Maxta has redefined enterprise storage, enabling our customers to realize the full potential of the Software-Defined Data Center. Their idea is simple (and not necessary new): eliminate Storage Arrays and Storage Networking with a completely software based storage solution that provide an hypervisor agnostic, VM-centric Enterprise-class data services for VM agility, continuous availability, data protection, and capacity optimization.

Some days ago I’ve got an interesting conf with Eric Keohan and Jonathan Klick about the Infinio product for storage acceleration in a VMware environment. Infinio is a start-up and began in 2011 when Columbia computer science professor Vishal Misra and his fellow researchers saw the potential for their work to solve real-world problems. My briefing with Avere Systems, during the last Powering the cloud event, was with Rebecca Thompson (VP Marketing) and Bernhard “Bernie” Behn (Principal Technical Marketing Engineer). Avere Systems brings to the market NAS Optimization solutions designed specifically to scale performance and capacity separately and take advantage of new Flash-based storage media using real-time tiering.
