VMware vSphere Storage Appliance was a software-based shared storage solution that enables high availability and automation in vSphere without shared storage hardware (for more information see this post). In 2014, VMware has announced the End of Availability of all vSphere Storage Appliance versions, effective April 1, 2014. All support and maintenance for vSphere Storage Appliance 5.5 will be unaffected and will continue to follow the Enterprise Infrastructure Support Policy. The End of General Support life date for customers with vSphere Storage Appliance 5.5 remains September 19, 2018. In a previous post I asked if Could VSAN replace VSA? And […]

During the last IT Press Tour (the 14th), in the Silicon Valley (December 1-5, 2014) we met several companies in different categories (Cloud, Storage and Big Data). The first on the second day was Exablox, and probably their presentation was one of the best, both for the contents and the type of presentation.

Microsoft is an historical name in the IT world, both in the consumer and the professional area. Actually it’s already a player in the storage world: just consider the Windows Storage Server edition included in some storage appliances (for example the Dell PowerVault NX family). But Windows Storage Server is little more than an “embedded” version of Windows Server and basically is just a dedicated Windows Server (with a better license cost than the full edition). An enterprise storage is just more than this and must provide more functions, but first to all an high […]

The challenge! SMB segment could be a (big) challenge due to the following reasons: Requirements: in most cases are the same of the enterprise segment. For example the required availability and SLA are really close and may imply similar solutions to achieve it. Constraints: are really different and in most cases very strictly. For example budget, but also the IT staff and skills. Evolution: and SMB may have big trend in evolution (or involution). Note that also in SMB, disaster recovery, business continuity, availability and security aspects have still to be considered. This kind of […]

Note This product has been discountined with the release 5.1 and replaced by the new VDP. Disclaimer I do not work for VMware and I’m not writing that VDR is the best backup product! First versions were affected by some bugs and issues… But now (from 1.2 release) could be one possible backup solution (of course with its limits). VMware Data Recovery (VDR) Official VMware site: http://www.vmware.com/products/data-recovery/ See also: http://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-11443 For VDR2 see also: Things to know before implementing VMware Data Recovery (vDR) 2.0 Note that this product works quite like the old esXpress (similar […]
