Nutanix does not need presentation: it’s one the first example of hyper-converged storage architecture and probably one of the most know (for an overview see this post).

Dell also does not need any presentation and their storage portfolio has some interesting products, included PowerVault MD (based on NetApp technologies), other PowerVault products, EqualLogic and Compellent solutions.

This week Dell announced is new partnership with Nutanix to provide a new series of their converged appliance built on Dell servers and powered by the Nutanix software extending Dell’s SDS portfolio. This is another step for Dell into the hyper-converged solutions for the web-scale market (there were already other OEM partnership).

Dell actually lack of a hyper-converged storage solution: there isn’t (yet) an EqualLogic VSA usable in production and there is no immediate plan for it. Of course Dell PowerEdge could be used for other solution, like for example VMware VSAN or Atlantis ILIO.

But with this special partnership Dell add a new product (a Nutanix rebranded product) in his portfolio.

The Dell’s OEM version of Nutanix product, will fall in a new Dell XC Series of Web-scale Converged Appliances, planned worldwide availability during the fourth quarter of 2014.

It will be a 2U appliance that can be stood up and ready to provision workloads in 30-60 minutes. The XC-Series will be supported through Dell and they are looking at integrating it with the Active System Manager software.  If you are unfamiliar with Nutanix, it’s an appliance that aggregates all of the compute and disk resources of each node in the cluster and presents a single Datastore for use by VMware ESXi, Hyper-V, or KVM.
