Finally VMware has announced some good news about the vSphere clients: for the (old/legacy) C# client and the web/flash one:

  • the C# client (AKA Desktop Client/thick client/vSphere Client for Windows) will not be available for the next version of vSphere (finally!). Current versions of vSphere (6.0, 5.5) will not be affected, as those will follow the standard support period.
  • the web client based on Adobe Flash, will be soon replace (finally!) with a new vSphere pure HTML5 Web Client (actually available through a Fling).

For the second, no doubt and no surprise: like the Embedded Host Client Fling that has tested and then included in ESX 6.0U2, the web client fully based on HTML5 will be included in a supported release soon (let’s see if maybe also on vSpere 6.0).

For the old client, the announces of its dead were started with the release of vSphere 5.1 (where all new features were included only in the web client). Four years ago! (see this post). You’ve heard this from us in the past, but finally the 6.0 version should be the latest one.

Third-party plugins could be a problem during the transition, but VMware already started engaging with plugin developers of all sorts to get them moving to the HTML bridge, which will allow the creation of a single plugin that is forward and backward compatible with both the vSphere Client and the Web Client, creating a smooth transition path.
