Finally Veeam Availability Orchestrator (VAO) is GA after a long period of beta.

Veeam® Availability Orchestrator is design to provide organizations with a disaster recovery (DR) orchestration engine for Veeam Backup & Replication™, in order to simplify the disaster recovery plans in place, documenting, testing and executions. With VAO you can automatically create, document and test DR plans, fully-prepared for C-level executive and stakeholder signoff, proving compliance with industry regulations and audits.

Also with Veeam Availability Orchestrator enables you to achieve enterprise service level objectives (SLOs) by minimizing downtime – planned or unplanned – through a reliable, automatically tested and documented disaster recovery (DR) plan for VMware vSphere (actually is limited to this type of hypervisor platform).

With VAO you can:

  • Satisfy compliance requirements with automated documentation that makes it easy to build and update the DR plan as the environment changes
  • Prove recoverability while reducing costs through automated DR plan testing and readiness checks that avoid expensive manual processes with zero impact on production systems
  • Ensure IT service continuity and minimize service disruption through orchestrated failover and failback of multi-site DR plans for planned migrations, disaster avoidance and disaster recovery

“Enterprise customers are demanding not only Availability, but also help in ensuring compliance,” said Danny Allan, Vice President of Product Strategy at Veeam. “In the event of a disaster, enterprises stand to lose millions in downtime, $21.8 million according to our latest Veeam Availability Report, as well as damaged reputation and lost productivity.[ii] Without having a disaster recovery plan that is up-to-date, tested and documented, it’s difficult to respond quickly when disaster strikes. With new Veeam Availability Orchestrator, enterprises can achieve a true Availability platform, reduce costs, define their DR plans, and achieve the peace of mind that comes from knowing that they are able and ready to provide business continuity, even in the worst case scenario.”

VAO require Veeam Backup & Replication™ and Veeam Availability Suite™ Enterprise Plus edition and  is licensed per VM, as a subscription model (note that also Veeam Backup & Replication can now be licensed per VM).

You only need to purchase licenses for the number of replicated VMs you want orchestrated (minimum 10 VM purchase), not the total number of VMs licensed in Veeam Availability Suite or Veeam Backup & Replication. The license fee includes maintenance (enterprise-class technical support and product updates) equal to the term of the subscription.
