The VMworld US edition is finished some weeks ago and there are just four weeks until the European edition of VMworld 2015! Although those two edition are too close there are still lot of difference in the contents and in the events themselves.

The European edition remain one of biggest event in EMEA and a must, especially if you have lost the US edition. This year I’ve followed also the US edition, so that I can make a comparison between them. And anyway, I’ve attend at all the EU editions and was a pity miss one of them.

I’ve explain why attend at this event (reason remain just the same from previous year), but if you need more reasons you can also watch this video.

VMware vCloud Air is the public cloud offer by VMware (formally known as vCloud Hybrid Service) built on the foundation of vSphere and compatible with your on-premises VMware’s based data center. Actually it included several different services: infrastructure, disaster recovery, data protection, and various applications as service.

During the past VMworld US 2015, I’ve also attend at the last Tech Field Day extra day and got the opportunity to know Datto.

Datto is an innovative provider of comprehensive backup, recovery and business continuity solutions used by thousands of managed service providers worldwide. This is the description from their web site, but honestly was not so easy understand what they really during the first part of the presentation.

One myth of public cloud services is that is cheaper compared to private services, but it’s (or it could be) wrong. The reality is that you don’t have CapEx and you have usually monthly OpEx.

But in the long (or sometimes also in the short) term could become more costly rather than an on-prem solution. Of course it depends by the service type and the real OpEx cost of your on-prem solution (sometimes not so easy to evaluate).

But also public cloud services may have some costs that are not so easy to be evaluated or estimated. Some services provider are really good by bring the credit and the cost much visible as possible, some others maybe not (or not yet).

During the last VMworld US, I’ve got the opportunity to talk with Yoram Novick, CEO of Maxta, about their storage solutions. Maxta’s mission is to dramatically simplify and streamline IT by thinking outside the storage box.

Their idea is simple: eliminate Storage Arrays and Storage Networking with a completely software based storage solution that provide an hypervisor agnostic, VM-centric Enterprise-class data services for VM agility, continuous availability, data protection, and capacity optimization.
