Reading Time: 2 minutes I’ve already completed a four full immersion days of a Dell-Compellent technical course to become a Dell Compellent Authorized Installation Professional. This was a good example on how a technical course (and it’s certification) must be. Considering that a Dell-Compellent Storage has an important part related to cabling (and design the right topologies) this course is available only in a real class (make not sense to make in a virtual mode) with la lab to permit each candidate to make it’s tasks and tests.

Reading Time: 6 minutes During the second european edition of Dell Storage Forum, Dell has announced new products and features, according of the Fluid Data architecture. “The nature of IT and what a data center should do for an organization is changing rapidly as customers face multiple and often competing models of how technology is delivered — from client to cloud to converged,” said Darren Thomas, vice president and general manager, Dell Storage. “Dell is best positioned with an end-to-end storage architecture that can optimize data at every point in its lifecycle through intelligence and automation. Dell’s Fluid Data […]

Reading Time: 2 minutes In some previous posts I’ve described the Dell KACE product family, included the Dell KACE – K1000 and KACE – K2000 products. As I’ve written, one of the limit of the K1000 was the lack of (official) support for mobile device. This limit will be filled soon (estimation release data is Oct 9, 2012) with a new product: Dell KACE K3000 MDM (Mobile Device Management) Appliance with some interesting features. Single-step secure setup that gets you up-and-running in minutes

Reading Time: 2 minutes In the previous post, I’ve described how is possible integrate the Dell storage array management with the new Microsoft System Center VMM 2012. But of course it is possible to do the same (and from longer time) also using VMware. With VMware vSphere we could have two different approaches for the integration: One is simple add the storage interface (or part of it) in the tab and/or the menu of vSphere Client by using a vCenter Server plug-in. In this case the integration could be strong or weak, but usually differ from storage and storage. […]

Reading Time: 2 minutes Rumors were from some months ago, but today Quest announced it has entered into a definitive agreement to be acquired by Dell. Dell will buying Quest for $2.4 Billion. Until now, Quest acquisitions were already a big number of players, including: VKernel (November 2011) Vizioncore (December 2008) Curious that Dell list only (for example) this advantages in the acquisition: The Quest One Identity and Access Management solution family adds to Dell’s very strong set of security assets with SonicWALL and Secureworks, creating a comprehensive set of security solutions to address important customer needs. Quest’s Performance […]

Reading Time: 3 minutes Has written in the previous post, Dell EqualLogic Host Integration Tools for Linux 1.1 officially support only a few Linux OS, but it can work fine also on others. Actually the distributions is RPM based, so there is a bigger effor to port it to other distro, like Debian and Ubuntu. I’ve tried with a updated release of CentOS 6.2 and it works fine, but you will need some packages that may be not installed (and also dkms that is not included in the installation source): yum install iscsi-initiator-utils libpcap gcc make rpm -Uhv http://packages.sw.be/rpmforge-release/rpmforge-release-0.5.2-2.el6.rf.i686.rpm […]

Reading Time: < 1 minute After a beta period, the Dell EqualLogic Host Integration Tools for Linux V1.1 has achieved (some days ago) Early Production Access status and is available for download via the standard Dell EqualLogic download site. Note that Early Production Access software is fully supported for production use. As a reminder, HIT/Linux includes tools that provide tight integration of EqualLogic PS Series arrays with Linux environments for enhanced protection, performance and simplified configuration and administration of EqualLogic PS Series storage arrays. HIT/Linux 1.1  feature enhancements over the previous release of HIT/Linux 1.0 include the following: Auto-Snapshot Manager/Linux […]

Reading Time: 2 minutes Some days after the recent acquisition of AppAssure, Dell has announced new models of EqualLogic storage and the new generation of PowerEdge servers. For the EqualLogic the announce was “obvious”: after the new models with 1 Gbps connectivity (PS6100 and PS4100 storages), announced on August 2011, the 10 Gbps models (PS6110 and PS4110) were just the next step. For more information see the post on the The Register and on the Dell Community. More interesting the announce of the new PowerEdge generarion (a logical move after the HP announce of his new generation): the G12 […]

Reading Time: 3 minutes Dell announced the acquisition of AppAssure, a global technology leader in back-up and recovery software that protects a company’s entire application infrastructure (for more info see the company web site). The acquisition of AppAssure’s product portfolio, R&D, patent portfolio, and sales and servicing functions add data protection and recovery IP to Dell’s storage solutions offerings. Data protection and recovery is a $3.6 billion business segment projected to grow 7% per year. Some interesting aspects of AppAssure backup solutions is that they are multi-hypervisor (actually only VMware and Hyper-V), can handle also physical systems as well […]

Reading Time: 3 minutes The Dell EqualLogic team has officially announced the release of Host Integration Tools for Microsoft (HIT/Microsoft) v4.0, now available for download. The EqualLogic Host Integration Tools for Microsoft (HIT/Microsoft) tightly integrate the EqualLogic PS Series arrays with Microsoft host operating platform and host applications enabling consistent data protection (using snapshots and replicas), performance optimization (with a specific multipath module) and streamlined management and operation (for example to help to connect a host or to initialize an array). I’ve see HIT/Microsoft 4.0 during the last Dell Storage Forum and also during the beta period and it’s […]

Reading Time: < 1 minute This is just a recap of some posts: Installing Dell OMSA 6.5 on ESXi 5 using VUM Installing Dell OMSA 6.5 on ESXi 5 using CLI Installing Dell OMSA Web Server in a VM Install Dell OpenManage on ESXi

Reading Time: 3 minutes As written in the previous post you can install the Dell OMSA package for ESXi 5 using VUM or the command line. Finally you need a “proxy” system with the web part of the OMSA package to connect to your ESXi. Usually this can be a physical server, like the backup server (or the media server of a backup solution). But when then backup is server is virtual and no other physical server is available? First issue is than a client OS is no supported at all (I’ve tried with Windows XP, it seems to […]

Reading Time: 2 minutes In a previous post I’ve describe how install the Dell OMSA package with VUM on ESXi 5. The Dell Open Manage (OMSA) is a useful tool (of course for physical Dell’s servers) for different reasons, like for example: configure and manage the RAID controller (for standalone servers and/or for local storage) and configure the (i)DRAC without reboot the host and enter in the POST menu (or without the physical access at the front panel). I think that the VUM approach is the simple and faster way, but some days ago I’ve got a standalone server, […]
