Reading Time: 4 minutes There are already lots of information about VMware vSphere 6.0 (actually in beta) but one big change has not be publicized so much: starting in December with the next ESXi Update release, TPS (Transparent Page Sharing) among virtual machines will no longer be enabled by default and this will not only be applied to next release, but also on current releases. This actually does not mean that will be not be available (at least not in the short period), but is another historical piece that will be not used by default, like the vSphere Client (first […]

Reading Time: 2 minutes Starting from vSphere 5.0, the vCenter Server Virtual Appliance (vCSA) is a new deployment options with some pros and cons. Some of the cons may limit it in the large environments, but starting with the version 5.5 the embedded database has more interesting limits to make it suitable for most of the SMB cases. Honestly I like the idea to have a vCenter Server as a single black box: it make simple to manage and backup it. But also to update (update vCSA is really faster compared to update a tradition vCenter Server). Anyway there […]

Reading Time: 2 minutes Seems that VMware is cleaning its products portfolio. After the End of Availability of VSA, now VMware is announcing the End of Availability (EoA) of all VMware vCenter Server Heartbeat versions effective June 2, 2014. As a result, all versions of vCenter Server Heartbeat will be removed from the VMware price list on June 2, 2014. After this date, you will no longer be able to purchase these products. All support and maintenance for the removed versions will be unaffected and will continue on per VMware Life Cycle policy through the published support period until […]

Reading Time: 3 minutes Using Linux as a guest OS in a VMware vSphere environment it’s, of course, well supported and more distributions are officially supported in vSphere 5 making more easy deploy Linux VM or Linux based virtual appliances. For the remote management a good option it’s usually use the SSH protocol, for the initial installation (or other special cases) you will need to use vSphere Console. Using the client from a Linux box could be difficult but with the new vSphere Web Client not so much, for more information see the KB 1006095 (Availability of vSphere Client […]

Reading Time: < 1 minute You can run the ESXi installer usually from the CD (official or customized), but also from PXE or from USB. The CD installation (still in version 5.5 the ISO fit on a CD) remain the most used option, but in some cases it’s not applicable. For example recent servers or blade systems lacks of the CD/DVD unit and in this case the only option is use the hardware management interface (like the IOLE for HP or the iDRAC for Dell), or use alternative boot options. PXE could be valuable in some cases, but require an infrastructure that […]

Reading Time: 4 minutes VMware Single Sign On is a new VMware vCenter Server components, introduced for the first time in vSphere 5.1, that manage the authentication across different VMware components both for services and users. It is not just an authentication broker but also a security token exchange providing a more secure way of accessing your vSphere solutions. For more information see also: vCenter Single Sign-On Part 1: what is vCenter Single Sign-On? This also mean that if you forget the SSO admin password you may have some trouble in your environment.

Reading Time: 2 minutes Some weeks ago I’ve got an issue in a VMware vSphere 5.1 environment with vMotion that stop each operation at 14% with some strange errors. Also there were several VMware KB articles related to this issues, with different reasons. The error message was simple: Timed out waiting for migration start request. So the closest KB article was: vMotion fails at 14% with the error: Timed out waiting for migration start request (2068817). But none of the possible solutions were applicable to my case.
