Con grande sorpresa, VMware ha rilasciato la nuova versione di vSphere 6.7 che include ovviamente ESXi 6.7 e vCenter Server 6.7, e porta con se’ anche la nuova vSAN 6.7!
Stranamente VMware non ha aspettato il clamore del VMworld, bensì un evento più ristretto per i soli partner. Ma ancora più strano i bit sono stati resi subito disponibili il giorno stesso.

Rispetto a vSphere 6.5 il nuovo vSphere 6.7 alza l’asticella con nuovi numeri massimi:
2X faster performance in vCenter operations per second
Come già si intuiva dalla versione 6.5, il VCSA è diventato privilegiato (e caldamente consigliato visto che dalla prossima release non ci sarà più una versione Windows).
Ma finalmente si sono decisi a preferire la versione vCenter with embedded platform services, con tanto di supporto per enhanced linked mode.

VMwarevSphere 6.7 non ha ancora un client HTML5 client completo, ma almeno vSAN e Update Manager sono gestibili.
Già in vSphere 6.5 vi erano stati grandi cambiamenti per la sicurezza, qua si prosegue con diverse funzionalità, tra cui la virtual TPM e il supporto per Microsoft Virtualization Based Security.
VMware vSphere with Operations Management 6.7 ha diverse migliorie… diventa sempre più chiaro che vCenter è inadeguato per il monitoraggio.
Con la VCSA di Sphere 6.5 si è abbozzato un RESTful based APIs. Ora vi è un’evoluzione maggiore.
VMware vSphere 6.7 permette non solo VM “mostruose”, ma anche funzionalità di tutto rilievo, come il supporto a Persistent Memory (PMEM) e Remote Directory Memory Access (RDMA).
Tante le novità nello storage, dal supporto ai dischi 4K nativi, ad un miglioramente dell’auto-UNMAP, più funzioni per i VVols, maggior numero di LUNs/Paths (1K/4K LUN/Path).
L’upgrade va seriamente valutato per tanti aspetti diversi, in primis la compatibilità. Ad esempio, come già annunciato con vSphere 6.5 alcuni processori non sono più supportati:
