Veeam Backup & Replication offers two options to protect Oracle databases:

You can use both or one of the options depending on your environment specifics and approach to handle Oracle databases.

Why use the RMAN plug-in?

Veeam Plug-in is based on the backup and restore functionality of Oracle Recovery Manager (RMAN) and transfers the generated backups to a Veeam backup repository. Instead of use a custom agent, it rely on a standard tool (for Oracle enviroment) and extend its capapibilities by adding a Veeam repository to the possibile destination.

Veeam Plug-in to back up Oracle databases can be the better option in the following cases:

  • The Oracle database administrator needs to fully control the backup and recovery processes (in this case the plug-in must be unmanaged by Veeam Server)
  • Existing Oracle RMAN scripts or external schedulers should be used
  • For a physical Oracle server, in this case the plug-in could be one option (the other is the Agent)
  • For a physical Oracle server using Automatic Storage Management (Oracle ASM) disks, in this case the plug-in is the only way to have application backup
  • For a Real Applications Clusters (Oracle RAC), in this case the plug-in is the only way to have application backup

How use the Oracle RMAN plug-in?

There are two different way to use the Oracle RMAN plug-in:

In the next articles we will see both cases.

Supported repositories

Veeam Plug-in for Oracle RMAN supports integration with the following types of repositories added to the Veeam Backup & Replication infrastructure:

If you plan to use HPE StoreOnce as a backup repository for Veeam Plug-in backups, the total number of stored files (data and metadata) must not exceed 3,000,000 per Catalyst store. If necessary, multiple Catalyst stores may be created on the same StoreOnce system.

Make sure the repository is configured as described in the ExaGrid section of the Veeam Backup & Replication User Guide.

You can also use scale-out backup repositories that contain repositories supported by Veeam Backup & Replication.

Actually is not possible save directly to an Object Storage repository!

Note that for Veeam Plug-in backups, the warning which indicates that free space on a storage device has reached a specified threshold is configured in the veeam_config.xml file of Veeam Plug-in. The warning settings in the Veeam Backup & Replication console does not affect this setting.
