Reading Time: 4 minutes Redfish is the new standard, promoted by Distributed Management Task Force (DMTF), for secure and scalable server management automation. With Redfish, the challenges of expanded scale, higher security, and multi-vendor openness are managed, while also enabling automation with modern DevOps tools and processes. Historically, in Dell(EMC) servers the out-of-band management function is implemented by the integrated Dell Remote Access Controller (iDRAC) with Lifecycle Controller component, embedded in every PowerEdge server (with different version, starting from the express to the different enterprise). For modular servers there is also another component called Chassis Management Controller (CMC) that provide […]

Reading Time: 6 minutes VMware has announced the general availability (GA) of VMware Integrated OpenStack (VIO) 4.1. The new release is based on top of the Ocata release and support for the latest versions of VMware products, across vSphere, vSAN, and NSX V|T (including NSX-T LBaaSv2). OpenStack is a framework for providing developers with cloud-style APIs and tools on top of a choice of virtual infrastructure technologies. OpenStack software controls large pools of computing, storage, and networking resources throughout a datacenter, managed through a dashboard or via the OpenStack API. OpenStack works with popular enterprise and open source technologies […]

Reading Time: 14 minutes This is an article realized for StarWind blog and focused on the design and implementation of a ROBO infrastructure. See also the original post. Introduction The fabric of SAN (means Storage Area Network) with Fibre Channel solutions have always been a dedicated network, with dedicated components (like FC switches). But, starting with iSCSI and FCoE protocols, the storage fabric could now be shared with the traditional network infrastructure, because at least level 1 and 2 have a common Ethernet layer (for iSCSI also layer 3 and 4 are the same of TCP/IP networks).

Reading Time: 2 minutes In the past, I’ve wrote about Ravello System and it’s unique solution (Smart Labs) that permit self-contained capsules to run your VMware/KVM development, test, training and demo environments in the cloud without migration. Also if the company has been acquired by Oracle (my guess was that most interested in this technology was VMware itself), it remain still active and now more important. Oracle want to push out the Next Generation of Cloud with the promise to be the Best Cloud for Enterprise and Ravello become an important piece of this vision.

Reading Time: 14 minutes This is the fourth part of a set of posts realized for StarWind blog and focused on the design and implementation of a ROBO infrastructure. See also the original post. Design a ROBO infrastructure. Part 4: HCI solutions 2-nodes hyperconverged solution As written in the previous post, for ROBO scenario the most interesting HCI (Hyper-Converged Infrastructure) configuration is a two nodes configuration, considering that two nodes could be enough to run dozen VMs (or also more). For this reason, not all hyperconverged solutions could be suitable for this case (for example Nutanix or Simplivity need at least 3 […]
