Storadera’s Variable Block Size Technology helps to overcome the IOPS limitation by changing block size according to current volume of incoming data. It balances block size with incoming bandwidth to always keep latency low and avoid being limited by hard disk IOPS.

Then, to optimize the costs, there are the disks: SSD remains more expensive compared to HDD, making the service more expensive or less profitable and sustainable.

For this reason they use SSD only for storing metadata, all the data are on CMR HDD. On February 25, 2025 the WD 26TB CMR HDDs has been deployed on the NL location.

Actually there are two important HDD technologies:

• CMR stands for Conventional Magnetic Recording. It is the type of hard disk that they are accustomed to, allowing randomly write to any part of the disk.
• SMR stands for Shingled Magnetic Recording. These drives use overlapping tracks to maximize storage density—much like roof shingles overlapping one another. However, this approach has a limitation: the disk is divided into zones, and each zone can only be written sequentially. SMR disks are slower, but in the future they can start using this technology.

It includes also immutability with object lock and object versioning.

Erasicure Coding actually is performed with EC 4+2, without any MAID capabilites (actually they provide a single hot tier function).
