Reading Time: 3 minutes One of the big news of the vSphere 8.0.3 (8.0 Update 3) version if the ability of live patch ESXi without reboot the host and without migrate the workloads! With the new Live Patching capability in ESXi, customers can address critical bugs in the virtual machine execution environment  and apply patches to all components without reboot or VM evacuation. Virtual machines are Fast-Suspend-Resumed (FSR) as part of the host remediation process, for this reason this new feature is not compatible with some specific cases (like VM protected by vSphere FT or VM with PCI passthough).

The vCenter Server 8.0 Update 3 release instead is a General Availability (GA) designation. Beta release of VMware Host Client

Reading Time: 2 minutes The VMware vSphere Host Client (or Host UI) was initially released as a fling in 2015, and then included as the default host client GUI interface with vSphere 6.0 Update 2. A web HTML5 interface was needed in order to replace the legacy Windows’s based vSphere Client. And was a good solution, light and fast enough… But after 10 years it becomes old and the user experience is too much different compared to the vSphere Client (HTML5).

Possible VMware vSphere backup corruption with unpatched version

Reading Time: 2 minutes Since version 4.x, VMware vSphere provides native API to perform image level backup of running VMs: VMware vSphere Storage APIs – Data Protection (formerly known as VMware vStorage APIs for Data Protection or VADP). Those API are based on VMware snapshot to create a readable base VMDK disk that can be easily copied by a compatible backup solution using a full transfer or using incremental transfer with Changed Block Tracking (CBT) feature.

As explained in KB 2107518, on February 16th 2024, VMware announces the End Of General Availability of the Free vSphere Hypervisor (ESXi 7.x and 8.x). As part of the transition of perpetual licensing to new subscription offerings, the VMware vSphere Hypervisor (Free Edition) has been marked as EOGA (End of General Availability).

Veeam CDP – Manually VIB management

Reading Time: 2 minutes One requirement for using CDP replication with Veeam product is Installing I/O Filter on each cluster where the VMs that you plan to protect reside and where replicas will reside (on each ESXi host of the cluster). The CDP I/O Filter are basically a VAIO plugin added using a VIB package. To install the filter on a specific cluster using the Veeam Console just open the Inventory view. In the inventory pane, navigate to the Virtual Infrastructure > VMware vSphere > vCenter Servers > <vCenter Server Name> > <Cluster Name> node and right-click it.
