Reading Time: 5 minutesRemote Office / Branch Office (ROBO) scenario is usually challenging due to some constraints (like limited budget, lack of local IT people, limited IT resources and stuff, …) and some possible risks (like the bandwidth or latency assumptions could be wrong and not enought). But in most companies the solution must provide same enterprise level services, like a right level of high availability, data protection, scalability (maybe not locally, but having more offices with similar solutions, …). In most cases a two nodes solutions with a virtualization level could be enough, but what about the […]

Reading Time: 4 minutesStorMagic, a software-defined storage company enabling hyper-converged infrastructure for two nodes configuration and SMB,  has announced the launch of SvSAN 6. With the launch of Version 6 StorMagic will, for the first time, offer SvSAN in a Standard and Advanced Edition. Both will be available globally now that StorMagic is a Preferred Solution Partner within the Cisco® Solutions Partner Program and via the company’s OEM agreement.

Reading Time: 4 minutesAtlantis Computing has announced the HyperScale CX-4 product targeted for distributed datacenters and also the ROBO (Remote Office/Branch Office) scenarios. The CX-4 appliance is a two-node hyperconverged integrated system with compute, all-flash storage, networking and virtualization designed for ROBO and micro data centers. The hardware configuration include two nodes with 4 TB of effective storage capacity and 48 compute cores in a compact 2U footprint, available with different appliances brads: Atlantis (with Supermicro hardware), Dell (with the support of the FX2 platform), HP, Lenovo and Cisco (this partnership was added during the last VMworld):

Reading Time: 2 minutesThe new Virtual SAN 6.1 has also another new features related to a specific deployment scenario: a 2-Node Remote Office Branch Office (ROBO) configuration. This configuration was possible with the previous VMware product (VSA) but was not suitable with VSAN, making space for other solutions like StorMagic SvSAN or StarWind Virtual SAN.

Reading Time: 3 minutesVMware vSphere Storage Appliance was a software-based shared storage solution that enables high availability and automation in vSphere without shared storage hardware (for more information see this post). In 2014, VMware has announced the End of Availability of all vSphere Storage Appliance versions, effective April 1, 2014. All support and maintenance for vSphere Storage Appliance 5.5 will be unaffected and will continue to follow the Enterprise Infrastructure Support Policy. The End of General Support life date for customers with vSphere Storage Appliance 5.5 remains September 19, 2018. In a previous post I asked if Could VSAN replace VSA? And […]

Reading Time: 5 minutesIn the previous post I’ve described the challenge in the SMB segment and some possible scenarios. And how is VMware addressing this challenge? One of the news of the last VMworld, was the attention of the SMB segment with several sessions specific for it, group discussions, business cases and so on. But it’s not limited to VMworld, the attention is growing due to the challenge of fit in the the SMB requirements (that in most cases are quite similar to the enterprise requirements!) and the constrains (where usually are limited budget and limited IT stuff) […]

Reading Time: 7 minutesThe challenge! SMB segment could be a (big) challenge due to the following reasons: Requirements: in most cases are the same of the enterprise segment. For example the required availability and SLA are really close and may imply similar solutions to achieve it. Constraints: are really different and in most cases very strictly. For example budget, but also the IT staff and skills. Evolution: and SMB may have big trend in evolution (or involution). Note that also in SMB, disaster recovery, business continuity, availability and security aspects have still to be considered. This kind of […]
