DPU support in VMware vSphere

Reading Time: 3 minutesA Data Processing Unit (DPU) is a programmable computer processor that tightly integrates a general-purpose CPU with network interface hardware. In VMware, starting with vSphere 8.0, DPU can be used to offload workloads from an x86 host to a DPU, as well as providing an additional layer of security by having an air-gapped environment running some of the processes. This is the result of Project Monterey.

Reading Time: 3 minutesOne of the big news of the vSphere 8.0.3 (8.0 Update 3) version if the ability of live patch ESXi without reboot the host and without migrate the workloads! With the new Live Patching capability in ESXi, customers can address critical bugs in the virtual machine execution environment  and apply patches to all components without reboot or VM evacuation. Virtual machines are Fast-Suspend-Resumed (FSR) as part of the host remediation process, for this reason this new feature is not compatible with some specific cases (like VM protected by vSphere FT or VM with PCI passthough).

Beta release of VMware Host Client

Reading Time: 2 minutesThe VMware vSphere Host Client (or Host UI) was initially released as a fling in 2015, and then included as the default host client GUI interface with vSphere 6.0 Update 2. A web HTML5 interface was needed in order to replace the legacy Windows’s based vSphere Client. And was a good solution, light and fast enough… But after 10 years it becomes old and the user experience is too much different compared to the vSphere Client (HTML5).

Possible VMware vSphere backup corruption with unpatched version

Reading Time: 2 minutesSince version 4.x, VMware vSphere provides native API to perform image level backup of running VMs: VMware vSphere Storage APIs – Data Protection (formerly known as VMware vStorage APIs for Data Protection or VADP). Those API are based on VMware snapshot to create a readable base VMDK disk that can be easily copied by a compatible backup solution using a full transfer or using incremental transfer with Changed Block Tracking (CBT) feature.
