Reading Time: 2 minutesOne of the first big events of this new year will be the Dell Storage Forum (the first Dell’s European storage show) during the second week of January (9-12). This event was partly born from the hashes of C-Drive (Compellent trade show) that was supposed to have its first European incarnation last year but due to the acquisition of Compellent by Dell C-Drive got canceled and Dell Storage Forum was born instead conveying all things storage by Dell in a single storage-focused event.

Reading Time: < 1 minuteThis is just a recap of some posts: Installing Dell OMSA 6.5 on ESXi 5 using VUM Installing Dell OMSA 6.5 on ESXi 5 using CLI Installing Dell OMSA Web Server in a VM Install Dell OpenManage on ESXi

Reading Time: 3 minutesAs written in the previous post you can install the Dell OMSA package for ESXi 5 using VUM or the command line. Finally you need a “proxy” system with the web part of the OMSA package to connect to your ESXi. Usually this can be a physical server, like the backup server (or the media server of a backup solution). But when then backup is server is virtual and no other physical server is available? First issue is than a client OS is no supported at all (I’ve tried with Windows XP, it seems to […]

Reading Time: 2 minutesIn a previous post I’ve describe how install the Dell OMSA package with VUM on ESXi 5. The Dell Open Manage (OMSA) is a useful tool (of course for physical Dell’s servers) for different reasons, like for example: configure and manage the RAID controller (for standalone servers and/or for local storage) and configure the (i)DRAC without reboot the host and enter in the POST menu (or without the physical access at the front panel). I think that the VUM approach is the simple and faster way, but some days ago I’ve got a standalone server, […]

Reading Time: 4 minutesAs I’ve written in a previous post, Dell has recently released the new versions of some Equallogic’s software, included the new Host Integration Tools (HIT) for VMware 3.1 that is now compatible with vSphere 5 (it support also the Storage Clusters and VASA). The appliance and the documentation are available from the Equallogic support site. HIT/VE is distributed as a OVA file (the current version is HITVE-3.1.1.32.ova) and the deploy is the same as other virtual appliance. The VM it’s based on a CentOS 5.3 distro and it’s configured with virtual hardware 7 (so it […]

Reading Time: 3 minutesWith ESX/ESXi is possible have several information from the physical hardware (with CIM) and this could be enough in most cases, especially for monitoring (with hardware health) and to gain some inventory info (like the Service Tag of a server). But for some specific tasks (like a RAID rebuild o check of the local storage, or have a detailed inventory of the physical RAM banks) is necessary use the specific native tool from the hardware vendor. For Dell servers, the tool is called OpenManage Server Administrator (OMSA) and the current version is 6.5. It is […]
