Reading Time: 2 minutes Compared to other backup software, Veeam Backup & Replication has several formats to save and handle the backup files. As you can see in the Advanced Settings for each backup jobs there are different formats (or mode) where the files are saved: Reversed incremental: the last file is a full version and past files are re-calculated as delta files. Incremental: the first file is a full one and on each backup jobs is created a new delta file. Incremental with synthetic full: similar to the previous but a new full file is periodically re-calculated. Incremental with […]

Reading Time: 2 minutes The SAN Transport Mode is a way to implement a LAN-free backup solution when the backup server is a physical machine and have a direct access to the VMFS datastores. This method was first provided by the VCB Framework and then ported to the vStorage API related to backup and data protection. In order to use this method in the proper way, some configurations and considerations are required:

Reading Time: < 1 minute Some weeks ago, Veeam has released the first patch for the Backup & Replication 6. The fixed issues are:  Direct SAN Access processing mode does not work for some virtual machines with certain SAN makes and models. Virtual Appliance (Hot Add) processing mode does not work when backup proxy is installed on non-English version of Microsoft Windows. Upgrade related issues affecting jobs created with v5 – poor incremental backup performance, and large VIB file created on the first incremental run. Also this patch is only available thought the technical support, because is not yet included […]

Reading Time: 3 minutes Finally, after several weeks from the official announce, Veeam Backup & Replication 6 is available (from yesterday). About the new features see: What’s New in v6 http://blog.mwpreston.net/2011/11/21/veeam-v6-whats-new/ http://www.veeam.com/blog/veeam-backup-replication-v6-what-a-list-of-new-and-improved-features.html One of the biggest news of Veeam v6 is the Multi-Hypervisor support: as of version 6 Veeam will now support both VMware (of course it support vSphere 5) and Microsoft Hyper-V all from the same interface. Other interesting features are: Scalability – Veeam has completely redesigned their backup architecture in v6.  With that they have the addition of backup proxy servers which offload the backup and replication […]

Reading Time: < 1 minute As written in a previous post the current version of Veeam Backup (5.o.2) works also with vSphere 5, due to the compatibility of most of the vStorage API for backup. But to be honest there is some issue, like for example in the usage of the SAN transport mode. Veeam has publish a post on his blog, to announche the release of a hotfix on 20 October, 2011, to FULLY support vSphere 5. One of the main issues with Veeam Backup & Replication 5.0.2 was that it didn’t work for all processing modes with VMSF5 […]

Reading Time: < 1 minute Veeam has start a free community educational resource site:  Backup Academy. This site provides training on basic principles of virtualization and data protection. These basic principles are presented in a product-neutral fashion, meaning that there are no specific backup products mentioned. The only time specific products are mentioned is when the hypervisors (VMware ESXi, Hyper-V) are mentioned, as well as specific guest operating systems and applications that we need to protect as IT professionals. See the official announce: Backup Academy: Free data protection training & certification for virtualization. I’ve not tried yet the course part […]

Reading Time: < 1 minute Official announce: Veeam unveils Veeam Backup & Replication v6, extending leadership in virtualization data protection. Veeam Software today unveiled major enhancements in Veeam Backup & Replication™ v6. Probably the most evident new feature is theMulti-hypervisor support (actually limited only to VMware and Windows Server Hyper-V). Note that the vSphere 5 compatibility is not specified, but the related Storage API are not changed (or not too much) and also the v 5.0.2 works “fine” on vSphere General availability of v6 is expected in Q4 2011.
