Reading Time: 4 minutes If you have tried to apply the VMware vSphere 6.7 Update 3 patch on a DellEMC PowerEdge server, you may have some kind of performance issues. The vCenter become very slow and some basic operations, including vMotion are very very slow (also more than 100 times!).

Reading Time: 6 minutes I’ve already wrote about the different reasons on Why upgrade to VMware vSphere 6.7 (or why not), but I’ve not yet provide tips and hints on how perform the upgrade process. If you are lucky enough to have a full VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) stack, then you don’t have much problem… the VCF Lifecycle Manager that can make your life easier (see also Simplify VMware’s products update/upgrade). Otherwise you need to plan this activity carefully and perform different tasks, some manual, some automatic.

Reading Time: 4 minutes The Dell Boot Optimized Storage Solution (BOSS) is a new option for the installation of the hypervisor part, in a virtualization enviroment, or more important in a hyper-converged infrastructure (HCI) host! The dual SD option was already present in all PowerEdge, also in previous generations, and was a good choice to separate the hypervisor from the disks or simple use diskless based solutions. And was a good option for vSphere ESXi when servers were only used as a compute nodes.

Reading Time: 5 minutes During the VMworld US 2018, one of the announces was the VMware ESXi for ARM porting, specific for the embedded and edge IoT systems, so not like a general purpose solution for all ARM servers (but an interesting move to increase the possibility for bringing the virtualization on ARM). VMware demonstrated ESXi on 64-bit ARM running on ARM hardware built to common industry standards; note that VMware demonstrates not just virtualization, but also resilient operations and ease of management at the Edge, via FT-protected 64-bit Arm VMs and vMotion in a high-availability DRS cluster…

Now seems that there are more than rumors with the announce, during the latest VMworld US 2018, of VMware vSphere for ARM. To be honest, not exactly vSphere, but just ESXi… anyway an interesting announce. But to be clear, limited to embedded and edge IoT systems, so not like a general purpose solution for ARM servers.

Reading Time: 3 minutes Dell EMC OpenManage Server Administrator (OMSA) is a complementary tool that provides a comprehensive, one-to-one systems management solution in two ways: from an integrated, web browser-based graphical user interface (GUI) and from a command line interface (CLI) through the operating system. Usually, you should add it to each bare metal system, unless you are using other management tools. But also if you are using Open Manage Essential (OME) or similar, OMSA provide some unique and powerful features, like the access to the BIOS settings.

Reading Time: 2 minutes Seeams that there is an issue in CPU hot-add on Windows Server 2016 running in VMware vSphere 6.5, but it’s something hard to reproduce this issues on a different systems. Because on most systems it works correctly, but, at least in a case, the CPU hot add does not work as expected.
