Reading Time: 4 minutesNot all the different CPUs are the same: they may have a different Instruction Set Architecture (ISA). An Instruction Set Architecture (ISA) is part of the abstract model of a computer that defines how the CPU is controlled by the software. The ISA acts as an interface between the hardware and the software, specifying both what the processor is capable of doing as well as how it gets done. The ISA provides the only way through which a user is able to interact with the hardware. It can be viewed as a programmer’s manual because […]

Reading Time: 2 minutesIn December 2022, reports suggested that Microsoft had acquired Fungible for around $190 million. Fungible is a startup in the Data Processing Unit (DPU) market, launched in 2016 by Bertrand Serlet, a former Apple software engineer who sold a cloud storage startup, Upthere, to Western Digital in 2017, alongside Krishna Yarlagadda and Juniper Networks co-founder Pradeep Sindhu. On January 9, 2023, Microsoft confirmed the acquisition but not the purchase price and Fungible’s team will join Microsoft’s data center infrastructure engineering teams, which will focus on DPU services for storage and networking.

Reading Time: 2 minutesOn May 26, 2022, AMD announced that it has completed its acquisition of Pensando Systems in a transaction valued at approximately $1.9 billion. The Pensando team will join the AMD Data Center Solutions Group, led by AMD Senior Vice President and General Manager Forrest Norrod. Pensando’s distributed services platform will expand AMD’s data center product portfolio with a high-performance Data Processing Unit (DPU) and software stack that are already deployed at scale across cloud and enterprise customers including Goldman Sachs, IBM Cloud, Microsoft Azure and Oracle Cloud.

Reading Time: 2 minutesNVIDIA and Mellanox today announced that the companies have reached a definitive agreement under which NVIDIA will acquire Mellanox. Pursuant to the agreement, NVIDIA will acquire all of the issued and outstanding common shares of Mellanox for $125 per share in cash, representing a total enterprise value of approximately $6.9 billion. Once complete, the combination is expected to be immediately accretive to NVIDIA’s non-GAAP gross margin, non-GAAP earnings per share and free cash flow.

Reading Time: 4 minutesThe 2018 was the year of the CPU related threats, starting with the Meltdown and Spectre bugs affecting several processors, but with most of issues related to Intel based CPU. Unfortunately, this was only the beginning and many other bugs were discovered later. And we’re probably just at the tip of the iceberg.

Reading Time: 9 minutesWith all those Meltdown, Spectre, Foreshadow, … bugs that affect several CPU, you may be interested in what can be the overall performance impact for all the related patches. There isn’t a simple answer, because it really varies by the processor vendor (Intel CPUs are more affected than AMD CPUs), probably also by CPU the family, for sure by the type of workloads (CPU bound workloads will be more affected, but it depends also on which instructions are used), … but also the type of environment.

Reading Time: 4 minutesThis is the year of the security threats originated by hardware level bugs. The year has begun with the Spectre and Metldown bug with several months of possible solutions, new BIOS, new patches… and new variants of those bugs (like Spectre V4 and V5). But we are far from the solution because other bugs came out. And more will come out… All the software used at the microprocessor level and all the optimizations will probably be a good vector for new attack patterns. As already written, we are still far from the solution.
