Actually VMware Update Manager works only with the “old” vSphere Client (the web edition is not yet available), and you need to install also the plugin client part on the vSphere Client.

But today I’ve got a strange issue during the installation, and was not possible complete the installation, remove it or simple fix it. The error message was:

Error applying transforms. verify that the specified transform paths are valid

As usual in the VMware KB there is an article that describe the issue and the solution: KB 1023938 (Upgrading vSphere Client fails with the error: Error applying transforms. Verify that the specified transform paths are valid).

This was for the version 4.1, but the same issue apply also for my case (5.1 U1 version). By removing the Windows registry key refering the “VMware vSphere Client” string, was possible remove the broken installation and replace with a working one.

Hoping that the Web Client will include also this feature as soon it’s possible.
