In my briefing with Dot Hill, during the last Powering the cloud event, was with Warren Reid, EMEA Marketing Director at Dot Hill. I’ve met him also last year during the past event so was the opportunity know what has changed in the last months.

Dot Hill is a OEM manufacture in software and hardware solutions for storing, sharing, protecting and managing data.

Their storage array products are really interesting mid-size market for the  front-end options and in the software functions. But they have also some interesting achievements (search on Internet using DotHill and CERN and you will get some interesting results and reports) in the world of supercomputing and in general of HPC systems. And also some user cases in the media area, since their storage can reach interesting values of throughput constant and continuous.

Other interesting vertical makets are Telecom & Mobile Messaging, Media & Enterprenment, Big Data / Data Analytics, Oil & Gas. All usually covered by the AssuredSAN™ 4000 series.

As written in the previous post, the front-end options are quite good and include: FC, SAS and iSCSI. And was possible change the front-end by chaning the controllers (without loose the data). But not there is more flexibility: each new controller has 8 ports, with 4 ports based on QLogic®’s FlexSuite™ dual-personality adapter technology that permit to run on 16Gb Gen 5 Fibre Channel, 8Gb Fibre Channel, 4Gb Fibre Channel, 10Gb iSCSI and 1Gb iSCSI networks using the same hardware.

About their tiering approach it’s a real-time tiering with 2 (or more) tiers and actually it also rappresent their approach to SSD and Flash: instead of build a full flash solution, they are following the hybrid storage approach.
