Reading Time: 5 minutesOne myth of public cloud services is that is cheaper compared to private services, but it’s (or it could be) wrong. The reality is that you don’t have CapEx and you have usually monthly OpEx. But in the long (or sometimes also in the short) term could become more costly rather than an on-prem solution. Of course it depends by the service type and the real OpEx cost of your on-prem solution (sometimes not so easy to evaluate). But also public cloud services may have some costs that are not so easy to be evaluated […]

Reading Time: 5 minutesNow that I’m back from the VMworld US 2015, I can point some takeaways from this trip and give my event’s impression. First to all why an European should attend at the US edition of the VMworld? Simply because this one is the real VMworld: huge, epic, a real American event! Probably too much big and too much crazy, but sometimes is nice feel and see the difference.

Reading Time: < 1 minuteLike in 2012, this year I choose to attend at the US edition of VMworld. I like it in 2012, and probably I would like also this year. Is really different from the European one and sometimes (travels are too costly for European people) deserve a visit. This will be my second VMworld US and I’m really curious and exited! Will be also a VMworld without a new vSphere release (or I least I’ve not seen any beta)… things are changing… new products, new strategies! I’ve already written about my expectation and I hope that […]

Reading Time: 3 minutesVMware vSphere design is something important for VMware beginner, VMware engineer, VMware SME, or VMware architect. It’s not only related to know well the technologies, but understand how use it in the right way (in the right cases). VMware vSphere Design Essentials is a short book (only 176 pages), but with a good approach for design an IT environment, particularly a VMware vSphere based.

Reading Time: 2 minutesTech(nical) Field Day are well know events, organized by Stephen Foskett and his team, with the purpose of bring together innovative IT product vendors and independent thought leaders to share information and opinions in a presentation and discussion format. There are different Tech Field Day events by topic (Storage, Virtualization, Networking, Wireless and, next year, also Data), but also some special events live from other IT events: Tech Field Day Extra and Tech Field Day Live. And although not a Tech Field Day event, the same staff has occasionally organized a live Symposium event to showcase a particular area of enterprise IT technology.

Reading Time: 2 minutesLike in previous VMworld editions, the #vBrownbag TechTalks are returning also this year, both in the US and the European edition. The TechTalks are ten-minute presentations by community members at an industry conference. Most of them (and the original idea of the vBrownBag “unconference” was this) are originated with sessions not being accepted for the main conference catalog. We know we want to learn from the community so we arranged an alternative forum. TechTalks are limited to ten minutes; they deliver the very core of an idea. Keeping presentations short also means we can do […]

Reading Time: 2 minutesOne old (and now quite not used anymore) storage concept was about the Frame vs. frame-less architectures. Those terms are from the past decades and where used (especially from Dell-EqualLogic) to identify how storage controllers are dedigned and how they can scale: Frame-based storage contain individual components that scale independently (you can add more cache, network connections, disks, software, etc.) until it’s maxiums and until the product is still supported. Usually you have two storage controllers and one ore more shelves of disks. Frame-less storage is modular where each “module” include it’s own storage processors, […]
