Reading Time: 4 minutesEnd User Computing (EUC) is a difficult and challenge market: each year there is a promise to solve and manage it with MDM or VDI solutions (wasn’t the 201x the year of VDI?). But enterprise needs conflict with users and consumer needs. Enterprise needs security (at each levels) and users need simplicity (and usability) otherwise the solution is not adopted or accepted. VMware has address the EUC market in those year (see for example this 2012 report) with different products (like Horizon View, Mirage, AirWatch, …) and still consider it as a major pilar of […]

Reading Time: 2 minutesVMware vSphere 6.0 has got some issues, like the several related to CBT and data protection, during the first years of its life. Mostly is finally resolved, but you may still have strange issuesespecially during the upgrade procedure (most when you start from a vSphere 5.1 version). I notice, after an upgrade, also a strange behavior with vMotion where live VM migration fails with this error: A general system error occurred: PBM error occurred during PreMigrateCheckCallback: No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it.

Reading Time: 3 minutesAs you probably know VMware vSphere 6.0 had a critical issue con its Change Block Tracking (CBT) implementation that can impact all incremental backup with “VMware native” backup program (all agent-less implementation using the VMware VDAP API). This issue occurs due to an issue with CBT in the disklib area, this causes the change tracking information of I/Os that occur during snapshot consolidation to be lost. The main backup payload data is never lost and it is always written to the backend device. However, the corresponding change tracking information entries which occur during the consolidation task are missed. […]

Reading Time: 3 minutesPhoton Platform is a new infrastructure stack optimized for containers and cloud-native apps. It’s built to be used in API-driven, multi-tenant, high scalable, greenfield environments. You can run on it Docker, Mesos, Cloud Foundry or Kubernetes in a secure environment. The Photon Platform tt’s composed of two main components: Photon Machine, a lightweight “microvisor” based on ESX with Photon OS built-in.With Photon Machine, you can deploy Docker containers on a VMware hypervisor that includes built-in, mature, and enterprise-ready capabilities. Photon Controller, a distributed and multi-tenant, API-driven control plane optimized for scale, churn and high-availability. It manages […]

Reading Time: 3 minutesChanged Block Tracking (CBT) is a VMware feature introduced in vSphere 4.0 in order to implement native incremental backup at source level. VMware VDAP uses this technology and so all backup and recovery software designed for VMware use it for speed the backup. But last week a critical issue has been discovered on all vSphere 6  version (included the lates Update 1a) where Changed Block Tracking (CBT) data on ESXi 6 cannot be trusted.

Reading Time: < 1 minuteVMware and EMC took an important step forward in their cloud strategies by announcing plans to combine a critical mass of managed services assets from EMC II, and public cloud services from VMware vCloud Air under the Virtustream brand. Virtustream was acquired by EMC earlier this year, and is the leader in hosting mission-critical applications, such as SAP, in the cloud.

Reading Time: 2 minutesAs usually in the past years (see for example the 2014), the European VMworld is used to announce new software releases in the VMware Cloud Management Platform. In VMware strategy, Cloud Management is the control plane for the Software-Defined Data Center and the Hybrid Cloud and, of course, is one strategical aspect for both pillars. In the past year there is a shift from multiple products, multiple suites, to a unified platform:
