Reading Time: < 1 minuteIn a previous post I’ve described how ignore the warning in a View 5.x environment. But the right way so solve this “issue” remain replace the self generated and signed certificates with new one signed from a trusted CA (a public on, but also an internal one could be fine, if you can push its certificate on all the clients). This may become a mandatory requirement for future version of View (although it is not yet confirmed). For how generate and replace the certificates see: Official documentation KB 1008705 Guidelines for generating and importing an […]

Reading Time: 3 minutesSome weeks after the announce of the DynamicOps acquisition intent, VMware has announced it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Nicira, a pioneer in software-defined networking (SDN) and a leader in network virtualization for Open Source initiatives. VMware will acquire Nicira for approximately $1.05 billion in cash plus approximately $210 million of assumed unvested equity awards. The acquisition is subject to regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions. The parties expect the acquisition to close during the second half of 2012. The acquisition has been approved by the boards of directors of both VMware […]

Reading Time: 3 minutesWith the new version of System Center Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) 2012, the features gap is slowly reduced from the vSphere vCenter Server. But the positioning and the comparison remain not so simple due to different license (and different cost), different set of features, and different integration with other products. Note also that some features in Microsoft environment are not depending from VMM but are features of the Hyper-V or the FailOver Cluster part (so are basically included in the free Hyper-V Server), for this reason some features will change when VMM 2012 will be […]

Reading Time: 2 minutesIn the previous post, I’ve described how is possible integrate the Dell storage array management with the new Microsoft System Center VMM 2012. But of course it is possible to do the same (and from longer time) also using VMware. With VMware vSphere we could have two different approaches for the integration: One is simple add the storage interface (or part of it) in the tab and/or the menu of vSphere Client by using a vCenter Server plug-in. In this case the integration could be strong or weak, but usually differ from storage and storage. […]

Reading Time: < 1 minuteVMware today announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire DynamicOps, Inc., a provider of cloud automation solutions that enable provisioning and management of IT services across heterogeneous environments – VMware-based private and public clouds, physical infrastructures, multiple hypervisors and Amazon Web Services. Terms of the acquisition were not announced. The acquisition is scheduled to close in Q3 2012 subject to customary closing conditions. Reading Time: 2 minutesThe vCenter Operations Manager 5.0 is a powerful tool for monitor a vSphere environment. But, as writtent in the previous post, the software is distribuited using a vApp (with two VMs) that means the you need DRS if you deploy it on a VMware Cluster. Note that if you deploy it on a standalone ESXi host it does not require DRS. So how deploy this vApp with a vSphere edition lower than the Enterprise edition?

Reading Time: 2 minutesThe core of vCenter Operations Management is a vApp with two VMs: the UI VM with the user interfaces and some data the analytic VM that is basically the data collect Both must stay in the same network and on the same cluster. Really curios the choice of the OpenVPN to handle communications between the VM… Maybe there is some future plan to build a multi-tenant solution? Or simple a single UI with multiple collectors? The installation is quite simple and is basically a OVF deployment. For more info see: Official deployment docs Using vCenter […]
