What’s new in VSAN 6.5

VMware Virtual SAN has grow quite fast in the last year and now has more than 5000 customers (in more than 100 countries) and several features comparable with other storage solutions.

In few years VSAN has become an interesting solution:

  • VSAN 5.5: First version of the product
  • VSAN 6.0 (march 2015): add All Flash Array (AFA), 64 nodes as cluster size and more than 2x Hybrid Speed
  • VSAN 6.1 (September 2015): add stretched cluster and 2-nodes ROBO scenarios
  • VSAN 6.2 (March 2016): add deduplication and compression (only for AFA) and quality of service
  • VSAN 6.5 (Late 2016): will add iSCSI Access, 2-nodes direct connect and management improvements

Ready for the VMworld EU 2016?

Today the VMworld EU 2016 will officially begin with a specific day dedicated to partners (also considering the lack of the Partner Exchange event).

What you should expect from this VMworld? Something has already been announced (see the AWS partnership). But finally, after three VMworld (counting both the EU and US edition) there will be some news on the core product: VMware vSphere (considering also the release of Windows Server 2016). And, for sure, more info and probably more news con SDDC (including VSAN and NSX) and CNA.

VMware + Amazon = VMware Cloud on AWS

VMware and Amazon have announced a strategic partnership that brings those two companies together to deliver a vSphere-based cloud service running on AWS. This service will make it easier for customers to run any application, using a set of familiar software and tools, in a consistent hybrid cloud environment.

Currently in Technology Preview, VMware Cloud on AWS, will bring VMware’s enterprise class Software-Defined Data Center software to the AWS cloud, and will enable customers to run any application across vSphere-based private, public and hybrid cloud environments. It will be operated, managed and sold by VMware as an on-demand, elastically scalable service and customers will be able to leverage AWS services such as developer tools, analytics, databases, and more.

Windows Server 2016 is now available (with Docker support)

Finally after five technical preview, Windows Server 2016 is now officially in GA. For more information see the Ultimate Guide to Windows Server 2016 or the new features of this OS.

Remember the big change in licensing: now cores will count for the total number of needed licenses and you can start to re-consider also servers with one socker and lot of cores in your design.

Virtualization is not cool anymore?

Is (system) virtualization becoming legacy or old style? Sounds a strange question, but there are three main trends that are changing the role and the weight of virtualization in the IT:

  • Competition and more choices and options: VMware vSphere is still the leader (in most cases), but other hypervisors like Hyper-V and KVM are growing fast and become mostly features comparable.
  • Cloud management and cloud services: in most cases virtualization is hidden by the managemed and also for IaaS cloud virtualization is not necessary mandatory (see also virtualization is not cloud).
  • Container and microservices: are moving new application to a new level of abstraction (and automation); in some cases virtualization is used to provide containers, but still is not mandatory.
