Reading Time: 4 minutes During the second day of the third edition of Virtualization Field Day (#VFD3) one of the companies that we (as delegates) met was Spirent, that was (at least for me) a new name in the virtualization ecosystem. The company itself is well know in other fields and area, especially in test, measurement and service assurance solutions. There where pioneered in testing of Ethernet networks, IP Telephony and VoIP, VPNs, Multiplay, Cloud Computing environments, Data Center networks, CDMA applications, and Location Based Services. Spirent’s lab test solutions are used to evaluate performance of the latest technologies. […]

Reading Time: 8 minutes During the second day of the third edition of Virtualization Field Day (#VFD3) one of the company that we (as delegates) met was Coho Data that is a (new) cool company in the big storage arena. Their beginnings as Convergent.io with a specific goal of shifting the way that storage is built and managed. This session also match the announcement of the General Availability (GA) of their Web-Scale Storage Appliance for the Enterprise. Formally they are a software company, but the solution is a storage appliance already packet with both the hardware part and the software part (there are different reasons […]

Reading Time: 4 minutes In VMware ESXi the All Paths Down (APD) or Permanent Device Loss (PDL) condition is what occurs on an ESX/ESXi host when a storage device is removed in an uncontrolled manner from the host (or the device fails), and the VMkernel core storage stack does not know how long the loss of device access will last. A typical way of getting into APD would be a Fiber Channel switch failure or (in the case of an iSCSI array) a network connectivity issue. But there are also other scenarios that we will discuss later. VMware vSphere […]

Reading Time: 10 minutes Although there are some comparison between Hyper-V 2012 R2 (the version 4 of this product) and the existing vSphere 5.1 suite (like this one: Comparing WS2012 R2 Hyper-V and vSphere 5.1), I prefer keep consistency in the available product versions and compare the actual releases (and replace the precedent and old comparison between Hyper-V 2012 and vSphere 5.0). The 3rd release of Microsoft Hyper-V and the VMware ESXi (and vSphere suite) 5.1 has similar technical features (and both of them are in the top-right Gartner quadrant), and probably for the first time, VMware has added […]

Reading Time: 4 minutes The current version of Symantec Backup Exec is still not supported with VMware vSphere 5.1, according with the Software Compatibility List (SCL). The full support will be available with the 2012 R2 release and/or with the 2012 SP2 (seems confirmed according with this post, but no official date has been announced yet). The missing support does not mean that does not work, but it’s quite boring because you have a lot of minor issues, some not easy to understand.

Reading Time: 7 minutes During the last Dell Enterprise Forum, Dell announced a further differentiation to the range of converged infrastructure solutions to help businesses of all sizes to address common issues related to complexity, inefficiency and rigidity of the existing IT infrastructure. The new solution called Dell PowerEdge VRTX (available from 26 June) can be customized for specific applications and workloads, but also can bring enterprise-class convergent technology to new scenarios: ROBO and SMB.

Reading Time: 4 minutes During the last VMworld EU, on Monday, there was a NDA Blogger Session from Nutanix and I was one of the attendees. There were several people from Nutanix EMEA (Alan Campbell Regional director Sales, David Lawler Vice Presidend Marketing, Rob Tribe Regional System Engineering Manager, Jason Langore Senior corporate Account Manager, Jane Rimmer Marketing Consultant) as also other people from VMware (in the View and EUC area) and several other bloggers (include Giuseppe Guglielmetti, still from Italy). I’ve already write a couple of posts about their solution and the innovative approach of building a scalable […]
