Veeam has introduced Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 in November 2016, and it became a great success because it’s simple, light, fast to deploy and the restore process remain quite the same of Veeam Backup & Replication with the powerful granular restore.
Version 2.0 was a huge milestone with the support both for SharePoint and OneDrive (Business).
Version 3.0 (April 2019) improves the backup speed of SharePoint Online and OneDrive for Business incremental backups by integrating with the native Change API for Microsoft Office 365.
Now it’s the the turn of the new Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 v4.0 that adds new options in the backup target adding native object storage support.
Any object storage system compatible with the requirements of the Veeam Ready Object program is supported.
Backup can be performed to the following storage systems accessible from a Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 management server or a backup proxy:
- Local folder on a backup proxy.
- Direct Attached Storage (DAS) connected to the management server or backup proxy, including external USB/eSATA drives and raw device mapping (RDM) volumes.
- Storage Area Network (SAN). Management server or backup proxy must be connected to the SAN fabric via hardware or virtual HBA, or software iSCSI initiator.
- SMB 3.0 share (experimental support). Management server’s or backup proxy’s computer account must have Read/Write permissions to work with the network share.
- Amazon S3 object storage (new)
- Microsoft Azure Blob storage (new)
- IBM Cloud Object Storage (new)
- S3 compatible object storage systems, including Cloudian, MinIO, SwiftStack Storage and Wasabi S3. (new)
A backup repository will be extended with the specific object storage and backups will be off-loaded directly to object storage!
Once you configure a backup repository to offload data, it will consist of two parts:
- Local folder, which contains metadata (JET DB)
- Object storage, which contains the metadata and backups
