Simplify VMware’s products update/upgrade

Reading Time: 4 minutesManaging the lifecycle of a complete software stack it’s something potentially complex because to the interdependence between the different layers, the order of the update or upgrade and the multiple software piecies (but also potentially some firmware/driver updates). For VMware vSphere there is VUM that can simplify ESXi lifecycle, but for example cannot manage the vCenter/PSC upgrade/update process. For VMware vSAN, VUM has been improved to consider the proper flow of the update process.

Reading Time: 2 minutesVMware Horizon Client communicates with the View server, which acts as a broker between the client device and remote desktops and published applications. You enter credentials into Horizon Client, the server authenticates your credentials, and then the server finds the remote desktops and published applications that you are entitled to use. Also if you can use VMware Blast to access your virtual desktop or published applications, a client is usually preferrable to have full features.

Veeam Backup & Replication support for vSphere 6.7

VMware Workstation Pro 14 issues with old CPU

Reading Time: 2 minutesVMware Workstation 14 it’s a great product and adds several features from ESXi 6.5 and 6.7 (like NVMe support). But drops too many CPU from its compatibility list and this means less support for old PCs or laptop. With an unsupported processor, you can create, configure, move the VMs, but when you try to power on them, you will receive an error message like this:

For example in how EVC works as described in VMware KB 52085 (Hypervisor-Assisted Guest Mitigation for Branch Target injection). Update the VCSA to latest 6.1U1g and not to 6.5U2

Reading Time: 2 minutesVMware vSphere 6.5 it’s quite popolar now, considering the deadline for the version 5.5 in this year and the direct upgrade path from v5.5 to v6.5. But maybe not everybody want to update vSphere 6.5 to Update 2, considering that there will be no upgrade path (yet) to version 6.7 and maybe other minor issues due to the backport of some features.
