Reading Time: 4 minutesCaringo is a storage related company founded in 2005 to change the economics of storage by designing software from the ground up to solve the issues associated with data protection, management, organization and search at massive scale. Founders background on object storage were really solid, considering that they were involved in the EMC Centera project and their solution (Swarm) is quite interesting with some unique capabilities.

Reading Time: 3 minutesSome months ago Cohesity announced the public launch of the Cohesity Data Platform, a product designed to consolidate all secondary storage use cases on a unified environment that helps organizations control growing data demands. Now they are announcing the new v2.0 of their product that expands enterprise features such as SMB protocol support, cloud archive, Site-to-Site replication and hardware-accelerated, 256-bit encryption. The Cohesity Data Platform combines a web-scale storage architecture with standards-based hardware components that enable companies to transition from today’s expensive silos for different data use cases to a simple, pay-as-you grow solution for data management. Reading Time: 3 minutesVMware is unveiling the new VMware vCloud Suite 7 and vRealize Suite 7 that define the entire Cloud Management Platform (CMP). VMware delivers an Enterprise-ready cloud management platform (CMP) that supports two IT Outcomes.  The CMP speeds up IT service delivery, improves IT efficiency, and optimizes IT operations and capital spending. In this new release, VMware is further enhancing the cloud management platform to better support specific use cases our customers are addressing in their cloud management journeys.

Reading Time: 3 minutesAs announced some months ago, the new Virtual SAN (VSAN 6.2) will add new data services making this solution more rich that before. Version 6.1 was announced during the last VMworld editions with some interesting features, including a ROBO scenario. But was still limited in data service: better snapshot technologies, better VMFS, but still some limits and no deduplication, no compression, no erasure coding at all.

Reading Time: 4 minutesEnd User Computing (EUC) is a difficult and challenge market: each year there is a promise to solve and manage it with MDM or VDI solutions (wasn’t the 201x the year of VDI?). But enterprise needs conflict with users and consumer needs. Enterprise needs security (at each levels) and users need simplicity (and usability) otherwise the solution is not adopted or accepted. VMware has address the EUC market in those year (see for example this 2012 report) with different products (like Horizon View, Mirage, AirWatch, …) and still consider it as a major pilar of […]

Reading Time: 4 minutesSharing a USB device across the network could be useful in several user cases, but virtualization is one of them: also if you can connect a physical USB device in VMware vSphere (since version 4.1), this give some limits in cluster features like HA. Also other virtualization product does not have similar features (in Hyper-V, for example, it will add only in the next release), so usually external box are used to convert your local USB devices in a client – server approach.

Reading Time: 4 minutesSome months Rubrik announced the release of version 2.0 of Rubrik Converged Data Management to deliver complete data protection and rich data services at a global scale (see also my previous post). The idea is quite simple but disruptive: reinvent the backup models in order to eliminate backup software by integrating data protection, instant recovery, and DevOps infrastructure into a single scale-out product!
