Samsung does not need comment or explanation: is a big company in the consumer world, but it’s also well know in the enterprise world (for example for the SSD production).

Proximal Data is a company with an interesting software product: AutoCache specifically designed to solve the biggest barrier to virtualized server initiatives (I/O bottlenecks). AutoCache efficiently caches I/O in the server virtualization layer while minimizing the usage of system resources without guest OS agents. AutoCache works with standard flash PCIe cards or SSDs in virtualized servers, such as Microsoft Hyper-V or VMware ESXi (for more information on the setup for this solution see also:Proximal Data AutoCache – Overview and Installation).

The Hyper-V compatibility is quite interesting considering that there are lot of similar products for VMware, some for Linux systems, but only few for Hyper-V.

Now Samsung announced it has acquired caching company Proximal Data. Financial details of the deal were not disclosed. Samsung announced the deal this weekend, saying that Proximal Data will have an immediate impact on its business and on enterprise use of SSD storage.

Considering the size of Samsung this deal could have some important effect in a close feature. And seems also to confirm a trend in the flash world: Sandisk with Fusion-IO, Western Digital with STEC and Virident, … There is a lot of attention both in the Flash/SSD Technologies, but also on the software part.

Still nobody is (trying to) acquiring PernixData that is probably one of the strongest company in the software part for host flashes. Probably actually is too strong or, in my point of view, could be better if remain independent at least on who is building the flash on the hardware part.

Have a complete stack solution (hardware and software) could be nice but will also limiting the adoption of this entire stack (see for example the Dell Fluid Cache solution, really powerful, but limited only on few Dell hardware).

In this case Samsung is also an hardware producer, but adding Proximal Data solution could be a really interesting move. Let’s see in the closest future.
