Broadcom is going to acquire Brocade

Broadcom has announced a definitive agreement under which it will acquire Brocade merging networking with storage competency to build stronger company. Broadcom believes the SAN business is a strong complement to its portfolio of enterprise storage and networking solutions, also with the grow of converged storage solutions.

Due to competitive overlaps, Broadcom plans to divest the IP Networking business. Brocade’s intention is to assist Broadcom in finding a buyer that will continue to invest in the strong portfolio that Brocade created.

SonicWall reborn

As announced some months ago, the Dell Software division has been sold to Francisco Partners and Elliot Management. This division include Dell SonicWall (from the acquisition of more than 4 years ago), but also Quest (from another acquisition) and several other brands.

Now it’s clear that SonicWall brand reborns as a stand-alone company: SonicWall announced the launch of independent operations that it’s good for a security company (better to be as independed as possible).

Bill Conner is new President and CEO of this company. He hs spent bulk of his career in the cybersecurity industry, most recently as CEO of Silent Circle and previously as CEO of Entrust, President of Data Networks and President of Enterprise Networks at Nortel Networks.

Vendor’s community awards for 2017

Each big vendor has some kind of “community award” for individuals who have significantly contributed to the community of the specific vendor’s users over the past year.

Those kind of “technologies experts” could be book authors, bloggers (in most cases), leaders in some communities, tool builders, and other IT professionals who share their knowledge and passion with others. These people have gone above and beyond their day jobs to share their technical expertise and communicate the value of the specific vendor’s technologies to their colleagues and to the community.

New Linux kernel vulnerability

Dirty COW (CVE-2016-5195) is a privilege escalation vulnerability in the Linux Kernel. The bug has existed since around 2.6.22 (released in 2007) and was fixed on Oct 18, 2016.

“A race condition was found in the way the Linux kernel’s memory subsystem handled the copy-on-write (COW) breakage of private read-only memory mappings. An unprivileged local user could use this flaw to gain write access to otherwise read-only memory mappings and thus increase their privileges on the system.” (RH)

With the new vSphere 6.5 the legacy Windows vSphere Client is finally dead! Was supposed also during the beta of vSphere 6.0, but in the RC a new C# client has appear to avoid this kind of transition.

But also to avoid the new limits dictated by the vSphere Web Client, like the huge depency from Acrobat Flash!

How VCSA rise the level of vCenter

The new release of VMware vSphere 6.5 will finally add some interesting news of the vCenter Server. Not only the virtual appliance (Linux based) version is not fully featured (was almost in version 6.0, but still with the big limit of VMware Update Manager available only for Windows), but now has some features only for this version and the Windows one become the limited version.

First sign was the Fling for the migration from a vCenter edition to the VCSA: the official Windows vCenter Server to vCenter Server Appliance (VCSA) Migration Tool which is part of the new VCSA vSphere 6.0 Update 2m release!
