During the last VMworld US, I’ve got the opportunity to talk with Yoram Novick, CEO of Maxta, about their storage solutions. Maxta’s mission is to dramatically simplify and streamline IT by thinking outside the storage box.

Their idea is simple: eliminate Storage Arrays and Storage Networking with a completely software based storage solution that provide an hypervisor agnostic, VM-centric Enterprise-class data services for VM agility, continuous availability, data protection, and capacity optimization.

It’s an hyperconverged solution, where the MaxDeploy appliances and the MxSP software solutions provide organizations the flexibility to hyper-converge on any x86 server, any combination of storage devices, and any compute abstraction layer, eliminating the need for complex and expensive storage arrays.

Maxta-Architecture

Maxta also announced an expansion of its MaxDeploy™ Program, which enables easy ordering and deployment of hyper-converged solutions that run on servers powered by Intel® processors. The expansion includes new MaxDeploy appliances based on Dell and Lenovo server platforms.

The MaxDeploy Program, first announced a year ago, provides a simple and flexible way to deliver hyper-converged solutions on customers’ choice of server vendors, including Cisco, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Quanta and Supermicro. MaxDeploy removes the complexity and uncertainty associated with acquiring and deploying software-defined technologies to assimilate hyper-converged solutions by providing pre-defined and pre-configured appliances that are pre-loaded with software and ordered and deployed as a complete system. These appliances are delivered to customers by Maxta partners leveraging partners’ resource-rich portals for configuring, quoting and ordering.

So any server and any hypevisor!

For the servers, MaxDeploy is prebuild. Considering that server configuration is one of the key components of a MaxDeploy configuration, having prebuild appiance it’s more easy for the customers.

Also there is a configuration tool designed to provide recommendations for server configurations based on use case, server vendor, and capacity requirements.

For the hypervisor part, actuall Maxta works with VMware vSphere, KVM and OpenStack (with Kilo support). At the moment Hyper-V is not yet supported.

Management is done bya simple web user interface, all VM-centric, included realtime and historical reporting.

Actually the entire VM managed is already so VM-centric, that Maxta don’t think that Virtual Volumes can give to their product additional value (note that also other storage vendors have similar thought).
