During the last Dell Technologies World 2019 one interesting announce during the first keynote was the availability of different public cloud platform in order to run natively and integrated VMware vSphere based environments.
VMware Cloud on AWS was the first platform, but now there are several other options (note that there are also the VMware Cloud Verified partners, but in this case we are talking about seamless solutions).
One of this new platform is Microsoft Azure!
Yes… Microsoft Azure and Satya Nadella was on stage with Pat Gelsinger to explain the different new collaborations between Microsoft and VMware (and Dell).
Azure VMware Solutions are delivered by Microsoft, verified by VMware, and run on Azure infrastructure.
From my point of view a very smart move from VMware to make its platform more “open” (at least from the cloud provider point of view) and multi-cloud as possible (will be GCP the next?).
From Microsoft point of view, nothing so new… do you remember that
Microsoft, on Novemember 2017, has announced the preview of VMware virtualization on Azure, a bare-metal solution that runs the full VMware stack on Azure hardware, co-located with other Azure services. This is just a natural evolution, and now with the official approval and support by VMware!
Note that VMware Azure Solution will be a solution selled by Microsoft and engineered by Microsoft. Microsoft sells and supports Azure VMware Solutions. These offerings are also fully verified and supported by VMware.
Instead, VMware Cloud on AWS remain a solution selled by VMware and engineered by VMware, and as announced by Pat Gelsinger the primary choice from VMware point of view.
The solution by Microsoft, anyway, will offert the same (or the most) features, starting with a simple deployment procedure:
Of course it’s also a complete solution: VMware Solution on Azure by CloudSimple is a fully managed service that lets you run the VMware platform in Azure.
This solution includes vSphere, vCenter, vSAN, NSX-T, and corresponding tools. Your VMware environment runs natively on Azure Bare Metal infrastructure, on Azure cloud locations. The service includes all the features required to consume the VMware platforms efficiently and securely.
But more important is the seamless integration with an on-prem vSphere infrastructure, with the possibility to move your VMware-based workloads from your datacenter to Azure and integrate your VMware environment with Azure. Keep managing your existing environments with the same VMware tools you already know, while modernizing your applications with Azure native services.
In this way will also possible implement a true hybrid cloud and get on-demand access to additional capacity when you reach the limits of your datacenter, or when you consolidate or retire existing datacenters.
Actually Azure VMware Solution by CloudSimple is available now and it’s available in the US East and US West Azure regions. The service will become available in the West Europe region in the near future.
