Until now Microsoft simple does not support nested virtualization in its Hyper-V product. Nothing wrong with it, but it’s a case where not supported means also that it simple does not work at all.

So the only way to test Hyper-V (or other hypervisor) in a lab with a single physical system (server or client) was using other hypervisors (VMware ESXi, Workstation, or also Paralles or others). Or using this trick (useful also with the new hardware requirement of the next Hyper-V) but with the big limit where the VMs cannot be powered on at all.

Now with the next Windows Server release (Windows Server 2016) there will be some changes. According to a Build Conference session (Windows Containers: What, Why and How), seems that Hyper-V Windows Server 2016 will support nested Virtualization.

Recently I’ve got a strange issue on ESXi 6.0: after an host reboot the ESXi hosts display a false positive warning:

Deprecated VMFS volume(s) found on the host. Please consider upgrading volume(s) to the latest version

ESXi-VMFS-warning

Starting with vSphere 6.0 the VMFS3 version is now deprecated, but in my case all block based datastores were already at VMFS version 5!

As written in a previous post, in those days I’ve attend at the Nutanix .NEXT Conference where several big announces have been revealed during the keynotes.

First to all was a strength demonstration of Nutanix: 963 attendees with 7 no shows, more than 3200 registration for the Community Edition, from 0 to 1100 employees in 5 years, lot of announces in this conference, lot (really a lot) sponsors are great numbers and results.

As written in a previous post, during this days I’m attending at the Nutanix .NEXT Conference where several big announces have been revealed during the first keynote.

Really a lot, that I will need more to fix and digest them. Most of them are listed in the press release.

New product, new software, an integrated scale out file server, … make it simple and make it invisible were the main themes for the new infrastructures.

Dell Storage portfolio has grown in those years, also from some acquisitions (EqualLogic and Compellent) and some partnership (like the recent with Nutanix for the XC Series) becoming more complete and spread.

Actually there are three main lines in the “traditional” storage world that include: MD3 series (based on NetApp technologies), PS series (based on EqualLogic) and SC series (based on Compellent). And new solutions for the hyper-converged world, including the XC series and VMware EVO:RAIL appliances (but also other partnership, like the one with Nexenta or RedHat).

Reading Time: 4 minutesWith the new Windows Server 2016 Technical Preview 2 there are more features as described in a previous post. Some are also releated to the storage part of Windows Server platform where starting with Windows Server 2012, Microsoft has introduced lot of features including SMB3, de-duplication, a new filesystem for huge volumes (ReFS), storage spaces and the Scale-Out File Server solution. And with Windows Server 2012 R2 also a multi-tiering.

With Windows Server Server 2016 are added Storage Replica (to build, for example stretched cluster), an improved storage QoS, a better deduplication engine and a completly new Storage Spaces Direct (S2D).

The last one is the more interesting because it makes the Scale-Out File Server a real scale-out architecture.

Reading Time: 6 minutesSome weeks ago I was invited to as a delegate at the first edition of Data Field Day (#DFD1) event, scheduled in May 13–15, 2015 in California (Silicon Valley and San Francisco).

Data Field Day event purpose was to cover different topics from others Technical Field Day events: from big data to analytics to hyperscale architecture and cloud security, and all waves of innovations that are transforming the IT. A new format for some growing trends, including micro-services, mobile and the Internet-connected world.

As written in a previous post not all presentations where completely in topic: some where too much storage oriented. But for the first edition of #DFD1 this was acceptable. Cloudera was one of the cases where this issue was not present.
