What’s new in VMware NSX

Of course, in this VMworld 2014 there is space also for NSX with lot of sessions, user cases and related news. Related news maybe are not so big as in the past year (the first official announce of NSX), but anyway there is something interesting.

First to all the certification path on Network Virtualization: as written in a previous post, there are already the first (big) group of VCDX-NV. Now the certification page is update also with the blueprint for VCDX-NV and VCP-NV (you can already ask for the authorization for it) and the new certification VCIX-NV (instead of the VCAP level) will be also available soon.

Other news are related to new product releases: NSX for vSphere 6.1 and NSX Multi-Hypervisor 4.2.

Hyper-Converged Infrastructure with VMware EVO:RAIL

As written in the previous post, there are different approaches for implement a SDDC and EVO:RAIL represent the VMware’s way for implement fast and in a simple way an Hyper-Converged Infrastructure.

EVO represents an entire new family of Hyper-Converged Infrastructure offerings from VMware, and EVO:RAIL represents the first product in this family. It was announced in this VMworld 2014 (with a first list of EVO partners) and will be available during the second half of 2014.

Note that this product will be available only through qualified EVO partners (similar in the concept on how vSphere could be sold through a pre-installed OEM channel). But in this case will be ONLY thought this way: if you want to play with EVO:RAIL you must buy an entire solution or use the Hands on lab. Announced partners include Dell, EMC, Fujitsu, Inspur, NetOne and SuperMicro.

VMware EVOlution

The 2014 edition of VMworld US is started and, as usal, there are several news related to the VMware world (by the way, if you are not attending at VMworld, don’t miss the VMware NOW online event). Some are well know (like VVOLs or recent company acquisition), other will revealed during this event.

But apart the news themselfvel, the focus and the vision of VMware is evolving in this years to something more cloud oriented, or at least more and more close the cloud’s pillars: Abstrastrion, Automation and Agile.

The VM is still present (and most of the policies are VM centric), but the triple-A is driven the evolution. Starting from the Software Defined Datacenter (SDDC), that (in VMware’s vision) is still the Future of IT.

Atlantis USX 2.0: more than Software-Defined Storage

I’ve already write about Atlantis ILIO USX in some previous posts (for example look at the one related to Virtualization Field Day 3). Their solution is a in-memory software-defined storage solution that pools existing SAN, NAS and DAS from across the datacenter and then optimizes how server applications and VMs consume this storage.

Now Atlantis Computing has announced the new version 2.0 of this product with the promise to enable enterprises to deliver better than flash performance, for half the cost of traditional SAN.

With USX they are jumping in the storage world making their ILIO solutions more than an storage acceleration product, but also a full software-defined storage that can work also as a storage virtualization.

Veeam Task Manager for Hyper-V

Veeam has released another great free tool: Veeam Task Manager for Hyper-V. Veeam Task Manager for Hyper-V is also one of the many new features in Veeam Management Pack v7 for System Center.

Veeam Task Manager provides detailed Hyper-V performance monitoring metrics for CPU and memory at the individual VM level so you can identify which VMs are using the host resources. The metrics are updated every three seconds by default and can be configured to update less frequently if desired.

And Veeam Task Manager for Hyper-V is not only free, but is also a portable (this lightweight tool can run from any USB device for emergency troubleshooting without any installation or integration) standalone performance monitoring tool.

Platform9 launch a Cloud Managed Platform

There is a new player in the virtualization ecosystem and is called Platform9. The company is founded by early VMware engineers (with several years of experience) who have taken a fundamentally new approach to creating and managing private clouds.

As you can see from their first public blog post, Platform9 has launch a 100% Cloud Managed Platform designed to manage Docker, KVM and VMware vSphere environments. The idea is transforms an organization’s existing infrastructure into an agile, self-service private cloud within minutes, offering the simplicity of AWS-like public clouds with complete ownership of all resources and data.

Login VSI 4.1 public release announcement
