The VMware vCenter Operations Manager Suite is a powerful collection of products for help in monitoring and management tasks in a virtual (and not only) environment.

Actually is also included in some vSphere 5.5 bundle and there is the foundation edition available for free with each vSphere.

But the main issue of this set of products is the complexity of some of them (like the Configuration Manager) or the powerful of some specific features (like the custom UI of Operations Manager). Official documentation could be fine, but only starting and not for understanding some concepts or going deep with some advanced features.

You can run the ESXi installer usually from the CD (official or customized), but also from PXE or from USB. The CD installation (still in version 5.5 the ISO fit on a CD) remain the most used option, but in some cases it’s not applicable.

For example recent servers or blade systems lacks of the CD/DVD unit and in this case the only option is use the hardware management interface (like the IOLE for HP or the iDRAC for Dell), or use alternative boot options.

PXE could be valuable in some cases, but require an infrastructure that is not so fast to be deployed. So USB remain the most reasonable option for a quick installation in those cases.

Granular restore of application is usually a complex and long task that may require also good knowledge of the application itself. This because most backup programs just restore the application files and then using specific application procedures you can restore specific objects from those recovered files.

As written in previous posts, Veeam Backup & Replication has different ways to handle object restores: using Application Item Recovery (AIR) or, for some applications, using a specific Veeam Explorer components.

For SQL Server actually there is only the U-AIR option, that is really powerful but require at least the Enterprise edition and a virtual lab setup.

Like in the past years, the VMworld 2014 session proposals could be voted with the public session voting phase of the CFP (from May 5 to May 18 at 11:59 pm PDT). I’ve not count all the sessions yet, but seems around to a number similar of past year (past year there were 954 proposals)… so really a lot of choice.

Just choose the sessions that you think are valuable or the you would like to see.

How you probably know is possible run Hyper-V role (or Hyper-V Server) in a VM using latest version of VMware virtualization products (vSphere and Workstation) because they also can “emulate” the hardware instructions (AMD-V or Intel-VT) needed of hypervisors like Microsoft Hyper-V (but also, for example, Citix XenServer).

More complicated if you was to run Hyper-V in a nested VM inside Hyper-V (or some other virtualization platform that lacks of this “emulation” feature).

VMware Single Sign On is a new VMware vCenter Server components, introduced for the first time in vSphere 5.1, that manage the authentication across different VMware components both for services and users.

It is not just an authentication broker but also a security token exchange providing a more secure way of accessing your vSphere solutions. For more information see also: vCenter Single Sign-On Part 1: what is vCenter Single Sign-On?

This also mean that if you forget the SSO admin password you may have some trouble in your environment.
