After the release of the the new vCloud Suite 5.5, the Horizon View 5.3, now it’s the turn of the general availability of VMware vCloud Automation Center (vCAC) 6 and vCenter Operations (vCOPS) Manager 5.8.

Both were announced during the last VMworld Europe, in the VMware Cloud Management vision. Both present interesting function of cross-products and cross-cloud/environments.

After the upgrade of Veeam Backup & Replication, now it’s the turn of the monitorin program with the new update Veeam One 7.0 R2.

Details and the patch file are provided in this KB and after upgrading, your build will be version 7.0.0.912.

As the R2 update of the backup product, new environment are now supported:

  • VMware vSphere 5.5 and vCloud Director 5.5
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V and free Hyper-V Server 2012 R2, Windows Server 2012 R2 and Windows 8.1 as guest virtual machines (VMs), System Center 2012 R2 Virtual Machine Manager (VMM), Support for the installation of Veeam ONE and its components on Windows Server 2012 R2 and Windows 8.1

There are only 4 months left to plan you upgrade (or better your migration) to Windows 7 or Windows 8 (or 8.1). As written in previous post, on April 8th 2014 Windows XP goes end of life (after a very long period)! Note that this will impact both Windows XP SP3 and also Office 2003. For a complete list of all Microsoft’s products lifecycle see this page.

And an Operating System without security patches is not suitable for an usage in an connected world. So the only solution is migrate to new OS versions (or other OSes).

Several months ago (on 26th August) I’ve taken the VCAP5-DTA beta exam and finally I’ve got the results: it was a pass! This time the confirmation email was slightly different from the usual beta result because also the score report was provided:

Thank you for participating in the VMware Certified Advanced Professional – Desktop Administration program.
Please find your score report attached.

The result was a big surprise not because the exam was really difficult (wasn’t easy), but because was really long with several task to complete, with some of them really time consuming.

In my briefing with Dot Hill, during the last Powering the cloud event, was with Warren Reid, EMEA Marketing Director at Dot Hill. I’ve met him also last year during the past event so was the opportunity know what has changed in the last months.

Dot Hill is a OEM manufacture in software and hardware solutions for storing, sharing, protecting and managing data.

Their storage array products are really interesting mid-size market for the  front-end options and in the software functions. But they have also some interesting achievements (search on Internet using DotHill and CERN and you will get some interesting results and reports) in the world of supercomputing and in general of HPC systems. And also some user cases in the media area, since their storage can reach interesting values ​​of throughput constant and continuous.

In my briefing with Emulex, during the last Powering the cloud event, was with Shaun Walsh, SVP Marketing & Corporate Development, Emulex.

Was an interesting extension of the previous meeting with SNIA and FCIA to see how Emulex is approaching the FC storage world. To be honest they are working also hard in the Ethernet and traditional network world, but the core remain the FC world.

Emulex does not require too much introdution: the Company’s I/O connectivity offerings, including its line of ultra high-performance Ethernet and Fibre Channel-based connectivity products, have been designed into server and storage solutions from leading OEMs, including Cisco, Dell, EMC, Fujitsu, Hitachi, HP, Huawei, IBM, NetApp and Oracle, and can be found in the data centers of nearly all of the Fortune 1000.
