Veeam announced two new offerings which combine the confidence and reliability of Veeam’s backup and restore capabilities with the ease-of-use of Backup-as-a-Service (BaaS).

The news is that those two offers are not delivered through cloud partners, but directly as a Veeam’s portfolio service called Cirrus by Veeam.

Cirrus by Veeam was acquired from CT4, an Australian company who developed the cloud-native service utilizing Veeam’s industry-leading data backup and ransomware recovery platform.

More than ten years ago I wrote a post on Why Dynamic Disks are a bad choice… but they are still used too much without know the impact.

Microsoft Windows Dynamic Disks (or Dynamic Volumes) are an abstraction layer (introduced in Windows 2000) over the partitions (similar to the LVM layer on Linux environment) to decoupled the volumes (with their NTFS data) from the disk partitions and have a greater flexibility, like hot-extend a volume by simple add new partitions (but also several other advantages).

It’s something really old and obsolete… you can hot-extend a also a basic volume (from the GUI starting with Windows Server 2008/Windows Vista) and also basic volumes are an abstraction level.

Veeam Continuous data protection (CDP) is a technology that helps you protect mission-critical VMware virtual machines when data loss for seconds or minutes is unacceptable. CDP also provides minimum recovery time objective (RTO) in case a disaster strikes because CDP replicas are in a ready-to-start state.

First, CDP creates replicas and, then, keeps these replicas up to date. CDP constantly replicates I/O operations performed on VMs. To read and process I/O operations in transit between the protected VMs and their underlying datastore, CDP uses vSphere APIs for I/O filtering (VAIO) that gives an option not to create snapshots. Because CDP is always on and does not create snapshots, it allows reaching a lower recovery point objective (RPO) compared to the snapshot-based replication — near-zero RPO which means almost no data loss.
