Veeam Software has finally announced the availability of the new Veeam Availability for Nutanix AHV, a “Backup & Replication” version for Nutanix Acropolis Hypervisor (AHV).

In this way Veeam extend the supported (on-prem) hypervisors to the three majors: VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V and Nutanix AHV. Considering that also Nutanix it’s multi-hypervisors, the combination of Veeam and Nutanix can give the best.

Still there isn’t a native solution for other KVM based hypervisors, but those workloads can be protected with the Veeam Agents.

So, one year after the announce, during the Nutanix .NEXT event 2017, of the expanded partnership between Veeam and Nutanix  in which Veeam becomes the Premier Availability solution provider for Nutanix virtualized environments.

During this time, other backup vendors have implemented some solutions to protect AHV workloads, but finally there is also the Veeam solution.

Veeam Availability for Nutanix AHV will consist of three components:

  1. Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5 update 3a minimum
  2. Veeam Backup Proxy Appliance for AHV
  3. Veeam Backup repository (deduplication devices not supported in v1)

The solution will use a specific proxy appliance, totally new designed for AHV environment, this appliance will be able to collect the Nutanix-native VM snapshots and vault them on a Veeam repository (like a normal proxy). Note the backups and full-VM restores operation will be handled by a totally new web UI, specifically designed by Veeam to look and operate like the Nutanix Prism, to be more familiar to Nutanix administrators and users.

During a backup operation the Nutanix Distributed Storage Fabric (DSF) snapshot will be used within the Nutanix AHV cluster. But also the Nutanix guest tools (NGT) can be used to trigger the preparation of the guest operating system.

The license model seems follow all the last products: a subscription based model per VM per year:

3-year subscription – save 15%
110,93 EUR per year

But of course, it’s possible also to download the free trial and use it with no feature limitations for 30 days.

Will also be interesting see how the Nutanix best practices will changes in the next months… there is already a guide, but for Veeam with Nutanix/vSphere or Hyper-V (Best Practices: Nutanix & Veeam Backup & Replication for vSphere & Hyper-V). I will expect an updated version with also AHV.
