Reading Time: 5 minutesThe Dell Boot Optimized Storage Solution (BOSS) is a new option for the installation of the hypervisor part, in a virtualization enviroment, or more important in a hyper-converged infrastructure (HCI) host! The dual SD option was already present in all PowerEdge, also in previous generations, and was a good choice to separate the hypervisor from the disks or simple use diskless based solutions. And was a good option for vSphere ESXi when servers were only used as a compute nodes.

Reading Time: 3 minutesSwiftStack is a software solution to help people easily create large scale object storage infrastructure in their own data center. They can run their own globally-distributed storage cloud running behind the corporate firewall and keeping the data secure and locally. Now the new SwiftStack Software Appliance has a 1click Application Profile for Veeam to further simplify setup and management of cloud or on-premises object storage for Cloud Tier, a new feature in Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5 Update 4.

Reading Time: 4 minutesThe 2018 was the year of the CPU related threats, starting with the Meltdown and Spectre bugs affecting several processors, but with most of issues related to Intel based CPU. Unfortunately, this was only the beginning and many other bugs were discovered later. And we’re probably just at the tip of the iceberg.

Reading Time: 3 minutesNAKIVO is continuing releasing new versions of its main product and on the end of 2018 they released the NAKIVO Backup & Replication v8.0  and the NAKIVO Backup & Replication v8.1 releases. Now NAKIVO announced the release of NAKIVO Backup & Replication v8.5 that is the 25th software release of this backup and data protection product.

Reading Time: 4 minutesMost people probably already know the terms Converged infrastructures (CI) and HyperConverged Infrastructures (HCI) that are both become quite common in the IT world, with several products and solutions that aim to be fit in those classifications. With the addition of new terms, like composable infrastructures. But HCI has become a hot topic with several vendors that aim to be a leader in this area, or with several “magic quadrants” that try to define who is in. And most people say that HCI market will just eat all (or most) of the primary storage market.

Reading Time: 3 minutesVMware vSphere Update Manager (VUM) enables centralized, automated patch and version management for VMware vSphere and offers support for VMware ESXi hosts, virtual machines, and virtual appliances. For ESXi hosts it can manage both the update and the upgrade workflows, but can also be powerful for adding custom VIB package, like for example new drivers. Usually it takes the updated files from the VMware repository, but you can also add custom repositories (or depots).

Reading Time: 11 minutesThe last week I’ve realized a new article for the StarWind blog focused on the different types of storage controllers in VMware vSphere (see Storage Controllers in VMware vSphere). To access block-based devices (like virtual disks, CD/DVD-ROM), but also generic SCSI devices, a virtual machine uses storage controllers, which at least one is added by default when you create the virtual machine and the type of it depends by the type of guest OS that you have chosen. You can make several change changes while you are in the creation wizard.
