Reading Time: 3 minutesNow that the PSOD on vSphere 6.5 and 10 Gbps NICs issue is finally solved seems that vSphere 6.5 critical bugs are closed, but it’s not totally true. During an upgrade from a vSphere 6.0, I’ve found a really strange iSCSI storage issues where all the VMs on the iSCSI datastore were so slow to become un-usable. First I was thinking about drivers or firmware, in the hosts and in the NIC (1 Gbps) or the firmware on the storage.

Reading Time: 6 minutesCome scritto in un post precedente, alcuni mesi fa, ho iniziato un progetto (che da lungo tempo stentava a partire) di realizzazione di un libro su VMware vSphere. Il lavoro è stato completato e finalmente è disponibile al pubblico. Il libro Mastering VMware vSphere 6.5 è in vendita da una settimana sul sito Packt e anche su Amazon (benché in alcuni siti localizzati la descrizione del libro sia totalmente errata).

Reading Time: 3 minutesOne year ago, VMware has started the bifurcation of VMware Tools for Legacy and Current Guests using of two separate delivery vehicles: VMware Tools 10.1 is available for OEM-supported guest OSs only VMware Tools 10.0.12 was for the guests OS that have fallen out of support by their respective vendors are offered “frozen”. The frozen VMware Tools will not receive feature enhancements going forward.

The reason is the new (v2) on-disk format in VSAN 6.0 and the new filesystem that is used: VirstoFS. VirstoFS is the first implementation of technology that was acquired when VMware bought a company called Virsto a number of years ago. Also there is a new sparse format called vsanSparse. These replace the traditional vmfsSparse format (redo logs).

Reading Time: 3 minutesIn the VMware ESXi 6.x partitions layout, usually, there is a partition called “scratch” that hosts the log, the updates, and other temporal files. Scratch space is configured automatically during installation or first boot of an ESXi host and is not required to be manually configured.
