Reading Time: 4 minutes IPv4 (Internet Protocol version 4) is a widely used protocol for network communication and is a core component of the TCP/IP stack. But it has some limits, one is the limit in terms of available addresses, expecially if we are talking about public IP. IPv6 (Internet Protocol version 6) was design to resolve all the limitation of IPv4. IPv6 is designated by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) as the successor to IPv4 providing the following benefits:

Reading Time: 2 minutes Microsoft warned customers to patch a critical TCP/IP remote code execution (RCE) vulnerability that impacts all Windows systems (client and server) using IPv6 stack. The vulnerability is identified as CVE-2024-38063 and it’s a 9.8-out-of-10 on the CVSS severity scale. Note that, on Windows systems the IPv6 is enabled by default and, in the past, Microsoft itself has not recommend disabling IPV6: ” We do not recommend that you disable IPv6 or its components, or some Windows components may not function.” (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929852)

Reading Time: 2 minutes Software for Open Networking in the Cloud (SONiC) is the open networking solution used in Microsoft’s Azure Cloud. SONiC is the networking switch software used in the lower layer of Azure Datacenter fabric (TOR and Aggregation).

Reading Time: 3 minutes A Data Processing Unit (DPU) is a programmable computer processor that is usally tightly integrates a general-purpose CPU with network interface card (NIC) hardware. Sometimes they are called “IPUs” (for “Infrastructure Processing Unit”) or “SmartNICs” (because actually they are implemented in some special Network Interface Cards).

Reading Time: 5 minutes About Flowmon Flowmon Networks was a global network intelligence company acquired by Kemp in November 2020. The acquisition brings together application delivery and security services with deep network visibility and automated security incident response. One year after (in September 2021), Progress (NASDAQ: PRGS) announced the completion of the acquisition of Kemp and now Flowmon is one of the main company’s product, but still is keeping its own identity and also a dedicated web site (https://www.flowmon.com/en). Why Flowmon? Flowmon offers NetFlow based deep network visibility solution for network and security operations and try to solve one […]

In particolare sugli aspetti legati alla sicurezza delle reti, considerando anche l’attuale situazione legata al COVID-19 e di come abbia cambiato il modo di accedere alle reti e alle applicazioni aziendiali.

Reading Time: 4 minutes One important concept of virtual networking is that the virtual network adapter (vNIC) speed it’s just a “soft” limit used to provide a common model comparable with the physical world. The real limit depends by several aspects, included the hpyervisor, the CPU speed, the available RAM and (for external comunication) also by the physical NIC speed. For this reason, the Intel e1000 and e1000e vNIC can reach a real bandwidth bigger than the canonical 1 Gpbs link speed. But what about the vmxnet3 vNIC that can advertise also the 10 Gpbs link speed. What is […]
