In the night (in my timezone) between March 17th and 18th I’ve received an email with this subject: Congratulations, you have been selected as 2014 Dell TechCenter Rockstar!

Granular restore of AD items with Veeam Backup & Replication

Granular restore of application is usually a complex and long task that may require also good knowledge of the application itself. This because most backup programs just restore the application files and then using specific application procedures you can restore specific objects from those recovered files.

This also apply when you have to restore some object from a Microsoft Active Directory Domain Controller where you have to follow Microsoft directives on how handle Active Directory Backup and Restore. Of course you can enable the AD Recycle Bin and minimize the needs of granular restore, but you must first raise the forest functional level of your AD DS or AD LDS environment to Windows Server 2008 R2 in order to enable this function.

Granular restore of application is usually a complex and long task that may require also good knowledge of the application itself. This because most backup programs just restore the application files and then using specific application procedures you can restore specific objects from those recovered files.

This also apply for Microsoft Exchange where you may have the restored EDB files and then you can use a recovery database or ExMerge to gain your data back. But it takes time, space (usually you have to store an entire database file also for recover a single email) and enough skills to do the right things without mistakes.

After the VMware NOW: Virtual SAN Special Online Event of past week (on Thursday, March 6, 2014), now VMware announce the GA Virtual SAN 5.5, a Software-Defined Storage with the declared objective to bring the efficient operational model of virtualization to the storage world.

This product was widely announced in previous VMworld and arrived after a long beta program with and unprecedented customer interest and validation: 12,000+ Virtual SAN Beta Participants represent an interesting number (also considering some prizes and contents during the beta period).

#VFD3 – VMTurbo bring resources broker capability in your infrastructure

VFD-LogoDuring the third day of the third edition of Virtualization Field Day (#VFD3) the last company that we (as delegates) met was VMTurbo that is a well known company in the big virtualization ecosystem.

The core founding team started VMTurbo in 2009 (the initial company was called SMARTS but was soon acquired by EMC), realizing that the rapid growth of virtualization in the datacenter was redefining the management requirements for companies of all sizes. The VMTurbo platform first launched in August 2010 and since that time more than 9,000+ cloud service providers and enterprises worldwide have deployed the platform with 530+ customers. VMware announce the recertification policy

VMware has introduced a new certification policy (is effective as of March 10, 2014) that require a re-certification every two years. Actually this does not differ too much from other vendor’s technical certifications.

Note that, at least in this phase, this only apply to VCP certifications (and not like other have written also to VCAP or VCDX):

VMware is implementing a recertification policy for VCP certification. To recertify, VMware Certified Professional (VCP) holders must pass any VCP or higher-level exam within two years of earning their most recent VCP certification.

Some people have several concerns about this announce, but just read more carefully the VMware recertification policy to understand its real impact and meaning.

Tech Field Day is a community event for the community

Tech Field Day events bring together innovative IT product vendors and independent thought leaders to share information and opinions in a presentation and discussion format. Independent bloggers, freelance writers, and podcasters have a public presence that has immense influence on the ways that products and companies are perceived and by the general public. The world of media has changed, with social media and blogging gaining special importance.

But first to all, in my opinion, is a community event for the community: each session is live and available on YouTube and Vimeo some hours after, completely for free and to everybody (and you cannot miss them as also explained on this post: why you need to be watching Tech Field Day).
