Again issues with Storage vMotion and backup programs

Reading Time: < 1 minuteRecenltly I’ve got some issue with Storage vMotion due to the “lock” function used by some backup programs. I’ve write about it related with Symantec Backup Exec, but this time was with VMware Data Protector (VDP). Usually, backup programs disable Storage vMotion during the backup process to avoid datastore changes (and issue during the copy, considering that starting from vSphere 5.0 it’s possible use Storage vMotion also on VM with snapshots). But if the backup process fail, some backup programs does not clear this information correctly.

Symantec Backup Exec 2012 with vSphere 5.1

Reading Time: 4 minutesThe current version of Symantec Backup Exec is still not supported with VMware vSphere 5.1, according with the Software Compatibility List (SCL). The full support will be available with the 2012 R2 release and/or with the 2012 SP2 (seems confirmed according with this post, but no official date has been announced yet). The missing support does not mean that does not work, but it’s quite boring because you have a lot of minor issues, some not easy to understand.

Reading Time: 3 minutesMy briefing with Spectra Logic, during the last Powering the cloud event, was with Steve Mackey (VP International). The company design and deliver innovative data protection through tape and disk-based backup, recovery and archive storage solutions. Compared to previous companies met during this event, this is one with a long history (over 30 years of experience in storage) and it well know in the US, but honestly not the same in EMEA (or at least not in Italy) and, in fact, one of their mission is increase the market share in EMEA.

VDP: the new VDR in vSphere 5.1

Reading Time: 3 minutesIn the new vSphere 5.1, there is a missing component replaced by a new one: VMware Data Recovery (VDR) has been replaced by the new VMware vSphere Data Protection (VDP). VDR was a backup solution introduced with vSphere 4.0 and based on the VMware vSphere API for Data Protection (VADP) which includes the Changed Block Tracking (CBT) technology (to have incremental backup).
