Reading Time: < 1 minuteRecenltly I’ve got some issue with Storage vMotion due to the “lock” function used by some backup programs. I’ve write about it related with Symantec Backup Exec, but this time was with VMware Data Protector (VDP). Usually, backup programs disable Storage vMotion during the backup process to avoid datastore changes (and issue during the copy, considering that starting from vSphere 5.0 it’s possible use Storage vMotion also on VM with snapshots). But if the backup process fail, some backup programs does not clear this information correctly.

Reading Time: 4 minutesThe current version of Symantec Backup Exec is still not supported with VMware vSphere 5.1, according with the Software Compatibility List (SCL). The full support will be available with the 2012 R2 release and/or with the 2012 SP2 (seems confirmed according with this post, but no official date has been announced yet). The missing support does not mean that does not work, but it’s quite boring because you have a lot of minor issues, some not easy to understand.

Reading Time: 4 minutesNAKIVO Inc. has announced (on 25 march 2013) that it has released NAKIVO Backup & Replication v3.0 with support for file recovery from local and cloud based VM backups, single click integration with Amazon cloud, and advanced reporting. Downloading an entire backup from the cloud to recover just a few critical files can consume an unacceptable amount of time. However, with NAKIVO Backup & Replication v3.0, files can be instantly accessed and restored from any VM backup, regardless whether it’s a few feet or few thousand miles away, enabling rapid operational recovery from anywhere, including […]

The company design and deliver innovative data protection through tape and disk-based backup, recovery and archive storage solutions. Compared to previous companies met during this event, this is one with a long history (over 30 years of experience in storage) and it well know in the US, but honestly not the same in EMEA (or at least not in Italy) and, in fact, one of their mission is increase the market share in EMEA.

Reading Time: 2 minutesBackup Academy, the free educational community resource for VM backup professionals, has now one year of history. In this year has delivered several courses and whitepapers (one also from me). And several people (more than 700 professionist) have obtained a certification vendor independent on backup aspects. So what will be the future of this community? Seems that the anniversary will like a matter of refreshing news about Backup Academy! Some interesting information about its possible future are on the celebration post: Backup Academy is meant to give you the extra resources you need to get […]

Reading Time: 3 minutesIn the new vSphere 5.1, there is a missing component replaced by a new one: VMware Data Recovery (VDR) has been replaced by the new VMware vSphere Data Protection (VDP). VDR was a backup solution introduced with vSphere 4.0 and based on the VMware vSphere API for Data Protection (VADP) which includes the Changed Block Tracking (CBT) technology (to have incremental backup). But was a limited product (especially not suitable to scale to with several VMs) and also the 2.0 version introduced in vSphere 5.0 was not so changed too much (except in a little […]
